[Transformation of secretory cylindrial cells into ciliar cells in the epithelium of the human uterine cervix (functional transformation of highly differentiated cells)].

By electron microscopical investigations of the cylindrical epithelium of the human cervix uteri we could show that in ciliar cells a regeneration of ciliars is possible. There is a discussion about the question whether the pinching off of ciliars is the beginning of a transformation process into a secretory cell. The functional change of secretory cells to ciliar cells becomes obvious by the existence of so-called granulo-filamentary bodies in the cytoplasm of ciliar cells. These bodies grow by a granulo-filamentary transformation of secretory granules. As these granulo-filamentary bodies do not take place in the extrusion process but stay in the cytoplasm they may thus be used as an indicator which shows the finished transformation process of a secretory cell into a ciliar cell.

[Electron microscopical investigations on the so-called reserve cells in the cylindrical epithelium of the human cervix uteri (author's transl)].

By electron microscopical investigations on the cylindrical epithelium of the human cervix uteri there can be shown that the regeneration of the endocervical epithelium takes place from bipotent reserve cells, which are of fetal origin, lying in the basal layer of the epithelium. These cells are able for mitosis even in postnatal life. The reserve cells differentiate if necessary to squamous cells or secretory cells by forming typical cell organelles. There is a discussion about the question whether the reserve cells are persisting elements from fetal life or whether the numeral balance of the endocervical epithelium is kept by permanent mitosis.

[Carcinoid metastases in a uterine myoma].

For the first time carcinoid metastases in a uterine myoma with unsuspicious adnexes is described. In the reported case a carcinoid syndrom did not exist; the excretion of 5-hydroxyindolacetic-acid appeared to be within normal limits. In cases of a carcinoid within the female genital tract total hysterectomy with bilateral adnectomy is always advised, even if it requires repeated laparotomy.

[Electron microscopy studies on the early development of the endocervical epithelium in human fetuses].

In the 14, week of fetal life the cervical epithelium consists of a monolayer blastemic-like epithelium of undifferentiated cuboidal cells and ciliated cells. At the beginning of the 5. month there are circumscript epithelial proliferations forming cryptical infoldings. In the undifferentiated epithelial cells there appears glycogen and at the same time in the "Talsohlenzellen" precourses of secretory granules can be found.
