Trypsin-dissociated HeLa and human amnion cells were employed to investigate the effects of an anionic, a cationic, and a non-ionic surfactant on cell reaggregation. All the surfactants inhibited the reaggregation process, the effect increasing with surfactant concentration, and becoming significant at concentrations of about 10(-6) M for the anionic surfactant and about 10(-5) M for the others. The effects of temperature and ionic strength on HeLa cell aggregation, and of surfactants on the electrophoretic mobility of HeLa cells and the release of sialic acid from their surfaces by neuraminidase, were also examined. The results indicate that although electrostatic effects occur and are likely to be of importance in cell reaggregation, the effect of surfactants cannot be accounted for on this basis alone, and it is suggested that interactions involving the cell-surface glycoproteins, possibly indirectly via effects on the fluidity of the cell membrane, are also significant in this respect.
The source of the histamine released during damage to the gastric mucosa has been investigated in rats using perfused total gastric pouches. Two groups of rats were treated with either intraperitoneal normal saline or compound 48/80, and agent that produces mast cell degranulation, over a 5-day period. On the 5th day, total gastric pouches were prepared and connected to a perfusion circuit that enabled a 20-ml volume to be circulated through the pouches. The experiments consisted of three 30-min periods during which transmucosal potential difference was monitored and ionic (hydrogen and sodium) flux measured; standard acid solution was used in the first two periods and a taurocholate solution in the third. Sodium taurocholate produced a significant increase in ionic flux and fall in the potential difference, the magnitude of the changes being similar in the 48/80- and saline-treated groups. Histamine was released from the mucosa in significantly greater amounts during the taurocholate period, and the increase was similar in both groups of rats. Histological examination of the stomachs confirmed mast cell degranulation in the 48/80-treated groups. We conclude that the histamine released during mucosal damage is probably derived from the "nonmast cell pool" and that this histamine may play a role in mediating the mucosal damage.
Twenty-two patients with chronic proctitis were treated with metronidazole for 28 days in a double-blind controlled trial, but they did not appear to benefit from the drug.

After some short remarks about the organization of microsurgery in Australia, the microsurgical technique of retransplantation of dissected extremities and the conservation methods are described in detail. In 175 out of 208 cases, retransplantation of extremities was successful, i.e. certain functions were reestablished. Results were better in children than in adults. The most important factors in successful treatment are the conservation methods, skilled technique, and postoperative care, which may last up to 1 year. One retransplantaion center with 4 experienced surgeons per 5,000,000 population seems to be mandatory.
Controversy exists as to whether a transmissible agent is responsible for Crohn's disease. Previous reports have suggested that sarcoid-like granulomas can develop in animals following inoculation of homogenates derived from bowel affected by Crohn's disease. This study involved the injection of Crohn's tissue homogenates into experimental animals under a variety of conditions which might be expected to favour the demonstration of such an agent. Homogenates have been inoculated into the ileum of rats, mice, and rabbits and also given inoculated into ileum and footpads of rats which have previously been rendered lymphoedematous by surgical interruption of the draining lymphatics. Bowel homogenates from a total of 17 patients with Crohn's disease have been injected into 91 experimental animals. No macroscopic or microscopic changes indicative of Crohn's disease were detected. Thus study does not support the suggestion that a transmissible agent is present in Crohn's disease.
The effect of topical disodium cromoglycate (DSCG) has been examined in 30 patients with chronic active proctitis using a double-blind crossover trial. Each treatment period was four weeks and patients were given DSCG 200 mg by enema twice daily and 100 mg orally three times each day. Twenty-six patients completed the trial successfully, 14 responded to DSCG treatment, two improved with placebo, and 10 responded to neither. Patients who responded to DSCG had significantly more eosinophils in their rectal biopsies than those who failed to respond and in some instances the counts were very high. The findings support the hypothesis than an allergic reaction is important in the pathogenesis of proctitis.

Leucocyte ascorbic acid concentration declines with age. Patients with iron-deficiency anaemia have higher concentrations than normal while those with iron overload have a reduced concentration. It is suggested that these phenomena may be a result of reduced ascorbate catabolism in iron-deficiency anaemia and they provide support for the suggestion that the amount of iron in the tissues may be an important factor in determining ascorbic acid utilization.
