Molecular karyotype of Entamoeba histolytica and Entamoeba invadens.

We report the size-fractionation of Entamoeba histolytica and E. invadens deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) by pulsed field gradient electrophoresis. Using 3 different electrophoretic conditions, we were able to resolve 6 to 9 bands between 300 and 2000 kilobases (kb), distributed in 16-22 large and up to 31 small chromosomes for E. histolytica DNA. For E. invadens, 4 to 5 bands between 300 and over 2000 kb were resolved and discriminated in 4 large and 6 small chromosomes. A ribosomal probe from Trypanosoma brucei hybridized with a 1100 kb band in E. histolytica strain HM1:IMSS and with a 1000 kb band in clone A of strain HM1:IMSS. Both cell lines also showed hybridization at the origin. The ribosomal probe hybridized only at the origin of the E. invadens DNA lane. A triosephosphate isomerase DNA probe from T. brucei hybridized only with a 2000 kb band in E. invadens, indicating that banding patterns are chromosomal bands and ruling out the possibility of DNA degradation.

MURCS association and hypothalamic anovulation.

A new case of MURCS association (mullerian duct aplasia, renal aplasia and cervicothoracic somite dysplasia) in an 18 year old patient is reported. In addition to other minor phenotypical features, hypothalamic chronic anovulation was documented. Basal concentrations of PRL, TSH, GH, F and E were within reference values for adult women. Challenges with TRH and ACTH evoked normal responses in terms of TSH and F respectively. Basal levels of LH and FSH and a LHRH stimulation test demonstrated dissociation of both gonadotrophins. Persistent progesterone values within follicular phase levels led us to the diagnosis of hypothalamic chronic anovulation which was confirmed by the induction of ovulation by clomiphene citrate. This finding shows the importance of a detailed endocrinological evaluation in patients with the MURCS association in order to prevent secondary disorders due to endocrinological impairment.

[Risk factors associated with neural tube defects: exposure during the first trimester of gestation].

The neural tube defects (NTD) are a group of malformations of multifactorial etiology. Their high incidence in Mexico and the etiologic heterogeneity observed in several studies, prompted the present investigation with the main objective of looking for risk factors associated to NTD. We analyzed maternal exposure during the first trimester of pregnancy to different environmental factors, such as acute or chronic illnesses, immunizations, smoking, alcoholism, maternal or paternal occupation and exposure to chemicals. The sample include 360 patients with anencephaly, 249 with spina bifida and 44 with encephalocele, ascertained from a total of 230 635 live births and 4,020 stillborns, studied in the Mexican program of Registro y Vigilancia Epidemiológica de Malformaciones Congénitas Externa. Of the risk factors considered, significant differences with the control group were found for anencephaly in relation to maternal viral upper respiratory infection, hyperthermia, ingestion of analgesics, antiemetics and paternal occupation. In the case of spina bifida, significant differences were found only for viral upper respiratory infections.

[Management strategies in HIV/AIDS at the family level].

OBJECTIVE: To identify the critical points of the trajectories of the families of persons with AIDS which may serve as a basis to develop educational and support programs. THEORY AND METHODS: A qualitative investigation was conducted in 1995 in Ciudad Netzahualcóyotl, State of Mexico, Mexico. Rapid Assessment Procedures (RAP) were applied to determine the social, economic, demographic and cultural context of persons with HIV/AIDS in the community. Forty-six in-depth interviews were applied to persons with AIDS, their families and people from their social networks. RESULTS: The main aspects of the family response to the HIV/ AIDS are characterized, and it is demonstrated that it is possible to identify critical points in such a response which can be targeted through specific interventions. In Ciudad Netzahualcóyotl, a context of poverty, a migrating tradition, and gender social relations are the basis of the acceptance or rejection of persons with AIDS. The main finding refers to the ambiguos attitude, ranging from rejection to support, displayed by family members of persons with AIDS. This pattern varies according to the history and specific conditions of each family. CONCLUSIONS: Specific health interventions are proposed to support families with one or more persons with AIDS.
