[Early recognition of bone metastases (comparative study between bone scintigraphy and x-ray examination)].

The examination shows, that in search for skeletal metastases the bone scintigraphy marks the bone-process in 45% while the X-ray is still silent. Therefore, we believe that the first examination in quest of skeletal metastases must first be a whole-body scintigraphy and then secondly, an X-ray examination with tomography, inasmuch as scintigraphy cannot give an exact differential diagnosis (degeneration, inflammation or destruction).

[Functional scintigraphy of the kidneys with 99mtc-pertechnetate (author's transl)].

Sequential Scintigraphy or Functional Scintigraphy of the kidneys after intravenous injection of 99mTc-pertechnetate using a Gamma-camera yields important information about total and regional blood flow by observation of the radioactive bolus passage through the kidneys. Differential diagnosis between vascular (tumors) and non-vascular (cysts, infarcts, scar tissue) parenchymatous lesions can be established with high accuracy. Simultaneous registration of time-activity histograms for the individual kidney as a region of interest (Functional Scintigraphy) provides, furthermore, the possibility of assessing circulatory function of the investigated organ. The assessment of such time-activity histograms provides an additional accuracy in the evaluation of the Sequential scintigrams. The parameters of these time-activity histograms are discussed in detail. Standardized conditions of injection procedure are a basic requirement. An evaluation of the fraction of cardiac output supplying the individual kidney in comparison to the contralateral side is possible. One of the advantages of the method is the simplicity of its application. It is without discomfort for the patient and without risk apart from the inherent very low radiation dose. It is particulary suited for follow-up studies.

[Uric acid balance in radiotherapy].

Administration of uricostatics within the scope of radiotherapeutic treatment is indicated in all cases of manifest primary gout; in cases of latent primary gout, uricostatics should be given especially after administration of high integral doses or in case of large tumors with distinct radiation sensitivity. The decision depends on the renal function, as an increased output of substances to be eliminated by urine may induce an attack of gout in cases of latent gout, or, otherwise, may cause renal lesions followed by acute uric acid nephropathy.

[Scintigraphic demonstration of the synovial membrane].

A new technique to diagnose and control the progress of pcp in the hand is described using Tc 99 m to visualize inflammatory reactions in various tissues. Objectivity, repeatability and the possibility to see the disease in its earliest stages are advantages of the method.

[Results of the exercise (ergometer) test as a diagnostic screening procedure in children with short stature].

The so-called Exercise Test of Lacey and coworkers (1973) is based on the fact that a functioning pituitary can be stimulated by physical exercise. The test was performed in 28 children of short stature as an out-patient screening test. The results were satisfactory since a growth-hormone deficiency could be excluded in 70% of the cases. The convenience of this test, which entails the investigation of only two blood samples, is stressed in respect to paediatric practice.

[Pulmoscintigraphic long-term observations during postoperative irradiation of the mammary region (author's transl)].

The effect of ionizing rays on the pulmonary tissue during postoperative high-voltage therapy of breast cancer was investigated by a long-term study with the help of X-rays and nuclear techniques. The results prove that--in spite of optimal irradiation techniques--a local reduction of the pulmonary perfusion takes place as well as a shift of the cardiac output into other pulmonary areas, which are not exposed to the irradiation. Hereby, the pulmonary global function shows no significant change, as other authors have already pointed out. Likewise, no alteration was seen of the simple X-ray film after the use of this irradiation technique. In the pulmonary scintigram, however, a local reduction of the pulmonary perfusion was already seen after the application of 1500 rd, which increased still more in the posttherapeutic period. There were no signs of relapses within the observation period of more than 17 months.
