The junction of the petrosal and squamosal portions of the temporal lobe has important relationships that are of interest to the otologist. The resultant suture extends from the glaserian fissure across the top of the middle ear cleft and into the mastoid portion of the temporal bone. It may permit quick passage of infection from the middle ear to the middle cranial fossa. The petrosa may override the squama, forcing it down into the tympanum, where it could cause malleus fixation and a conductive type hearing loss. In the mastoid the suture is identifiable on the surface, but in the interior it is represented by the petrosquamosal lamina. The deeper portion in the petrosal portion of the mastoid may be easily overlooked in surgery of the mastoid and may lead to facial nerve injury.
The analysis in 1983 of representative samples taken from fruiting tops of seized cannabis plants illicitly grown in 19 localities on the Danish island of Bornholm showed that the average (mean) content of the total tetrahydrocannabinol (delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) + delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) was approximately 1.55 per cent, ranging from 0.1 to 4.2 per cent. There was no significant difference in the total THC content of cannabis plants from the Danish island of Bornholm and the content found by other authors in cannabis plants grown during the period from 1968 to 1972 in Afghanistan, India, Mexico, South Africa and Thailand. However, studies carried out on fresh cannabis seized on entry into the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland during the period 1975-1981 showed a larger content of THC (ranging from 2.3 to 4.9 per cent) than in cannabis plants from Bornholm.

Vein allografts were obtained from varicose vein patients in whom stripping and ligation was indicated. Proximal 30 cms of the long saphenous vein was removed and stored at -30 degrees C. A-V fistulas were constructed in the upper arm between brachial artery and the brachial or cephalic vein in dialysis patients. All these allograft vein recipients had major blood groups identical to the donors. Clinical experience over a two year period revealed a 100% long term patency. Complications including early graft thrombosis, superficial wound infection, hematoma formation and local edema were few and easily managed. Allograft rejection was not a problem in this series of patients. The large diameter grafts in upper arm position function well. They are convenient for the patient and preferred by dialysis personnel as a direct site for venepuncture. An initial experience suggests that preserved vein allografts may become the preferred material for arteriovenous fistulas.
