Detection and differentiation of cytomegalovirus antibodies by radioimmunoassay.

A sensitive radioimmunological method was adapted for the assay of anticytomegalovirus IgG and IgM antibodies. Binding of immunoglobulins G with cytomegalovirus (CMV) antigens was greatly reduced when an antigen prepared by sonication of the infected cells in glycine buffer was used in place of the antigen obtained by freezing and thawing of the cells. The application of labelled serum against the Fc fragment of IgG made it possible to identify selectively the antibodies bound with the virus antigen by antigenic determinants.

Tuftsin analogs with D-amino acid residues.

The syntheses of nine tuftsin analogs containing D-amino acid residues are described. Their biological activity is discussed in terms of possible influence of the configurational change in definite position of the peptide chain on the preservation of beta-bend conformation of the tetrapeptide.

13C nuclear magnetic resonance and circular dichroism studies of the tuftsin conformation in water.

13C-NMR and circular dichroic (CD) spectra of tuftsin and its analogues are discussed in connection with our hypothesis that the beta-turn is the biologically active conformation of tuftsin. The changes in CD spectra evoked by an increase in pH are interpreted as a demonstration of the increasing amount of beta-turn conformers in solution. Configurational changes in successive residues of tuftsin showed that residues 2 and 3 of the peptide chain are important for the tuftsin conformation.

Studies on the experimental infection of Hyalomma dromedarii (Koch) ticks with tick-born encephalitis virus.

The replication dynamics of 4 strains of tick-borne encephalitis virus, differing in neurovirulence towards white mice, and their penetration to the salivary glands and ovaries of H. dromedarii were examined. The ticks were infected by being artificially fed a large dose of the virus and were observed for 44 days. The virus actively multiplied in whole ticks and examined organs. A relation between the neurovirulence of the strains towards white mice and persistence of infection in the ticks and their organs was observed.

Characteristics of tick-borne encephalitis virus cirulating in Poland.

An attempt of chacteristization of tick-borne encephalitis virus strains, isolated in Poland in 1955--1970, was based on the determination and analysis of neurovirulence for white mice at intracerbral and subcutaneous virus inoculation, neuroinvasion, antigenic properties, cytopathogenic abilities, susceptibility to nonspecific hemagglutination inhibitors, susceptibility to temperature of 50degree and to 2M urea. Strains isolated in different regions of the country showed certain differentiation in pathogenic and antigenic properties as well in susceptibility to nonspecific inhibitors.
