Thirty-three patients suspected of having bronchogenic carcinoma were studied prospectively using magnetic resonance (MR). In this group, 30 underwent examination with computed tomography (CT), 15 underwent thoracotomy, six had mediastinal biopsy procedures performed, and eight underwent bronchoscopy. MR studies, which included transaxial spin-echo imaging (TR, 0.5 and 2.0 sec; TE, 28 and 56 msec) of all patients and sagittal or coronal imaging of 18, were performed without knowledge of CT findings, using only plain radiographs as a guide. CT and MR studies were interpreted separately. CT and MR provided comparable information regarding the presence and size of mediastinal lymph nodes. MR better discriminated mediastinal nodes from vascular structures. However, in two of 11 patients who had multiple mediastinal lymph nodes that were normal in size at CT examination and surgery, MR suggested a confluent abnormal mass, probably because of its poorer spatial resolution. MR was superior to CT in showing enlarged hilar lymph nodes, but CT was better for demonstrating bronchial abnormalities. In three of four patients who had a proved hilar mass with distal obstructive pneumonia, MR (TR, 2.0 sec) helped distinguish between the mass and collapsed lung.

Rearing preweanling rat pups away from their mothers by feeding through chronic intragastric cannulas has been shown to result in alterations in the growth of specific organs. In the present study, artificially reared (AR) rats and their normally reared (NR) siblings were sacrificed at various ages during this procedure to determine the time course of these alterations. Brain growth deficits were detected within 24 hours, peaked after 8 days of artificial rearing and showed some recovery by the end of the study. By day 18, the livers, kidneys and spleens of the AR pups were significantly larger than those of their NR siblings. The spleens showed an initial decrease in weight compared to the spleens of the NR pups. However, by day 18, the spleens of the AR group were significantly larger than those of the NR group.

Neonatal Long-Evans hooded rat pups were assigned to one of three groups: 1) pups normally reared, 2) pups implanted with intragastric cannulas and artificially reared with a common milk replacement formula, 3) pups implanted with intragastric cannulas and artificially reared with a protein-enriched milk formula. Daily body weights were recorded, as were the ontogeny of various reflexes. On day 18, the animals were behaviorally tested and then killed. There were no differences among the three groups in daily body weights, nor in the ontogeny of reflexive behavior. There were no differences in the wet weights of caudal brain sections, but the normally reared animals had significantly larger rostral brain sections than either artificially reared group. While cerebella of normally reared animals were significantly larger than those of the two artificially reared groups, there was a significant trend towards more normal cerebellar weights with the addition of protein in the formula of artificially reared animals. Behavioral tests indicated that the animals artificially reared have significantly different behavior than normally reared animals. However, compared to animals artificially reared using a common milk formula, animals artificially reared with additional protein in their formula behave more like normally reared animals.
High Gradient Magnetic Separation (HGMS) is a rapid and straightforward technique that has previously been proven effective in extracting erythrocytes from a flowing cell suspension if the red cell hemoglobin is in a paramagnetic state. In this work it was applied to the enrichment of the small population (less than 2%) of splenocytes from an immune mouse that bound sheep red cells to form rosettes. Samples flowed through the HGMS column in a strong magnetic field where rosettes and free sheep cells were selectively retained. These were subsequently eluted by simply removing the magnetic field. The process required 20-30 min per mouse spleen. Rosettes in the initial sample and in the fractions that passed through, or were retained by the column were enumerated under the microscope. Under the conditions used here, the retained and eluted cells typically showed a 20-50-fold increase in the frequency of rosetted cells, and the cells that passed through the magnet showed 90-100% depletion of rosettes. The recovery of intact rosettes and the overall cell recovery were generally both in the range of 80-90%.

Moxalactam was evaluated in the therapy of lower respiratory tract infections in 40 patients. The most common organisms isolated were Streptococcus pneumoniae (37.2%) and Haemophilus influenzae (21.5%). Gram-negative enteric organisms were isolated from six patients. No patient was evaluated as a treatment failure; however, two patients died of unrelated causes either during therapy or in the immediate posttherapy period. We determined the comparative minimal inhibitory concentrations of moxalactam, cefamandole, and cephalothin for our aerobic clinical isolates. Susceptibilities of the anaerobic isolates were measured by the Kirby-Bauer method. All isolates were susceptible to moxalactam. Moxalactam was found to be highly effective in the therapy of lower respiratory tract infections.

Serial weekly measurements of somatic growth and head circumference were made for ten weeks on 41 appropriately grown sick preterm infants (gestational age 28 to 32 weeks) with severe neonatal problems. Twenty-seven (66%) required prolonged assisted ventilation. During the period of acute illness, the velocity of growth for the sick infants was below that of the normal fetus, with deviation away from and below the normal fetal growth curve. During recovery, head growth paralleled that of normal fetal growth, and subsequently rapid "catch-up" growth in head circumference occurred. By comparison, six similar infants, whose head circumference followed the intrauterine growth curve, proved to have hydrocephalus. These results suggest that: (1) the brain participates in the growth retardation associated with being sick and premature and that apparently normal head growth under comparable circumstances may be associated with hydrocephalus; (2) in spite of an energy intake ranging from 80 to 120 kcal/kg/day by the end of the second postpartum week, normal growth in the sick low-birth-weight infant does not occur until their acute illness has resolved.
The intensity of the hyperthermic response in rats promoted by subplantar injections of 1 mg of carrageenin is directly related to the irritant properties of the type of carrageenin. The overall pyretic response is more dramatic in female rats than in male rats. Subtle changes in the time-course hyperthermic profiles are seen after hormonal modifications.
Twenty consecutive patients with premature rupture of the membranes were studied to determine the vaginal, endocervical, and neonatal bacteriologic flora. Patients who had membranes ruptured for more than 12 hours had more anaerobic species isolated from vaginal plus endocervical or endocervical cultures alone than did those patients with membranes ruptured for less than 12 hours. Overall, aerobic organisms were more frequently isolated than anaerobic organisms, but the majority of cultures were of a mixed flora. Streptococci, corynebacteria, and Bacteroides organisms were the most frequently isolated organisms from all sites cultured. Lactobacilli were isolated in only 45% of endocervical and vaginal cultures, and Enterobacteriaceae were infrequently encountered. This study indicates that there is a change toward a preponderance of anaerobic species in the birth canal when membranes are ruptured for more than 12 hours, and that this change is detectable before delivery.
