Sixty-two samples of human normal and abnormal semen and 23 samples of washed sperm were illuminated for 4 minutes with a narrow band non-coherent infrared device (BioBeam). Immediately after illumination the following parameters were examined in comparison with appropriate controls: motility, viability and morphology, fructose content of semen, acrosome reaction of sperm, viscosity of seminal plasma and analysis of the protein pattern. The mean value of motility grade calculated for the total number of 62 semen samples was 2.58 +/- 0.79 versus 2.17 +/- 0.75 (non illuminated controls), P less than 0.005. The mean value of motility grade of 23 samples of washed sperm was 2.89 +/- 0.77 versus 2.43 +/- 0.62, respectively (P less than 0.01). In two illuminated seminal plasma specimens, the viscosity was decreased by 8.8% and 14.8%, the protein content and pattern remained, however, unchanged. Neither the percentages of motile, viable and morphologically normal sperm, nor the fructose content of semen were found to be affected by the illumination.
IgE level was determined by radioimmunosorbent technique (RIST) using Phadebas IgE test in the sera of 37 patients with allergic manifestations to inhalant agents, foods, drugs and insect stings. High IgE level was found in 90% of the inhalant group and in 87.5% of the food group, whilst in the drug and in the insect sting groups the incidence was 9.1% and 0%, respectively.
The Kveim-test was studied in a geographical area (São Paulo, Brazil) not yet investigated, and leprosy patients were also tested. One hundred and forty seven patients from a general hospital who had had the possibility of sarcoidosis, as a differential diagnosis, were tested with Kveim suspension. Another group of 13 patients with clinical and histological diagnosis of leprosy (10 with tuberculoid leprosy lepromin-positive and 3 with indetermined leprosy) was also tested with Kveim suspension. Sixteen Kveim-tests (10 per cent) with sarcoid granulomatous reaction revealed histologically were considered positive. Three patients with sarcoidosis for more than 3 years gave negative Kveim-test. Four patients with positive Kveim-test had respectively lymphosarcoma, Crohn's disease, lung fibrosis and concurrent tuberculosis infection. Nine positive Kveim-tests (5.6 per cent) were coincident with sarcoidosis. Thirteen leprosy patients (ten tuberculoid) gave negative Kveim-test.
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health launched the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) in 1985. With the goal of reducing the prevalence of elevated blood cholesterol in the United States, the NCEP aims to raise awareness and understanding in both health professionals and the general public of high blood cholesterol levels as a risk factor for coronary heart disease. Public interest in blood cholesterol measurement has created an enormous market for cholesterol screening and education programs. The importance of quality screening and educational services was recognized by the NCEP, which has urged the training of all personnel involved in public cholesterol screenings. This paper presents models for training lay volunteers and health professionals to deliver quality public screening programs for high blood cholesterol that are consistent with NCEP recommendations. Blood cholesterol screening, counseling, and referral (SCORE) programs are key intervention strategies of the Pawtucket Heart Health Program (PHHP), a cardiovascular disease prevention research program in Pawtucket, RI. This paper describes the PHHP volunteer training and certification program for cholesterol SCOREs and the demographics of screening volunteers. With the goal of improving the quality of cholesterol screening and education programs nationally, the Cholesterol Training Center (CTC) was established in 1988. Using models established by PHHP, the center developed training workshops to help health professionals initiate, update, expand, or enhance training for cholesterol screening and education programs. CTC training protocols and the characteristics of workshop participants are described, and the workshops' effects on participants' knowledge and self-sufficiency are discussed.
Five strains of Cryptococcus neoformans isolated from the cerebro-spinal fluid and 4 from the blood of AIDS patients, were studied. Although morphologically identical, they differed in the auxanographic pattern. All strains were pathogenic for mice by intracerebral route. Six isolates were sensitive and the other three resistant to 5-fluorocytosine. All strains were sensitive to the other antifungal tested: nystatin, amphotericin B, clotrimazole, miconazole, econazole and ketoconazole.
The immunoperoxidase technique using a polyclonal T. cruzi rabbit antiserum was compared with the routine hematoxylin-eosin staining procedure in the study of two cases of congenital Chagas disease. Comparatively, the immunoperoxidase technique gave better results than that using hematoxylin-eosin in identification of T. cruzi. The immunoperoxidase technique detected T. cruzi nests in unsuspected sites like lungs and testes, in which the hematoxylin-eosin stain failed to demonstrate their presence. In the two cases studied there was no evidence of positive immunoperoxidase reaction which could suggest the presence of cross-antigens between T. cruzi and host tissues, in the heart, gastrointestinal tract or other organs. These negative results are discussed.
Lymphocytosis Promoting Factor (LPF) obtained from Bordetella pertussis, has the capacity to induce peripheral lymphocytosis in mice and blastogenesis of human lymphocytes in vitro. When this Factor is injected intracutaneously in animals and in humans, it was shown to induce local inflammatory reactions with histological, morphological and chronological characteristics of delayed hypersensitivity. LPF and conventional microbial antigens were tested intracutaneously in 35 patients with carcinoma undergoing immunotherapy and in 15 normal individuals. The results showed that the cutaneous reactions induced by LPF were similar to those of the conventional antigens routinely used to asses cell-mediated immunity. LPF via intracutaneous route did not show any adverse reactions. Histological studies were carried out in mice receiving intracutaneous injections of LPF. The immunological mechanisms involved in the induction of delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity by LPF are discussed.
Lobomycosis or Keloidal blastomycosis and Paracoccidiodomycosis found in South American tropical regions are considered different mycoses from the clinical and mycological point of view. Very little is known about the immunology of Lobomycosis, since the etiological agent of this mycosis, Loboa loboi, is not cultured "in vitro". In order to overcome this difficulty, a rabbit Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, antiserum is usually used, since crossed-antigenicity between both fungi has been demonstrated by serological methods and immunofluorescence. In this paper, common antigens between Loboa loboi and Paracoccidiodes brasiliensis were detected by means of rabbit serum against a metabolic antigen from Paracoccidiodies brasiliensis and using a peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) technique. This method provided retrospective studies on three cases studied by using histological material from Lobomycosis stocked for a long time. The antigenic relationship between both fungi was confirmed by our results based on biopsies from Keloidal blastomycosis and Paracoccidioidomycosis, by using the PAP method and a rabbit serum against a metabolic antigen from Paracoccidioides brasiliensis.

The humoral immune response of patients with intestinal and hepato-intestinal form of Mansoni's schistosomiasis treated with a single dose of Oxamniquine was evaluated by quantitation of IgG, IgM, IgA and IgE. A constant and significant increase of IgE was observed in the majority of patients after treatment. Augmentation of serum IgE after treatment was variable, but a 3 fold increase was observed. IgG increased slightly after treatment in 6 patients, and IgM increased in 5 patients under the same conditions. However, the difference between the levels of IgG and IgM before and after treatment was not significant. IgA levels were within the normal range, before and after treatment.
Delayed hypersensitivity by intracutaneous tests with leishmanin, tuberculin, trichophytin, oidiomycin, as well as sensitization with DNCB were assessed in ten patients with kala-azar. There was a significant depression of delayed hypersensitivity to leishmanin (Montenegro reaction) during the active phase of the disease. The response to ubiquitous microbial antigens and DNCB were also depressed as compared to controls.
Total IgE serum levels were determined by the radioimmunosorbent method (RIST) in 18 patients with strongyloidiasis presenting mild or asymptomatic disease. Results showed elevated IgE serum levels in 7 out of 18 patients (38.8%), ranging from 150 to 3600 ng/ml with a mean concentration of 973 ng/ml.
A highly significant percentage of malignancy (8.2%) was found in a group of 147 patients with Paracoccidioidomycosis. Tuberculosis was also observed in 19% of this patient group. The possible immune mechanisms involved in this association are discussed.
Cell-mediated immunity was investigated in 3 brothers with Hurler's syndrome (Gargoylism). The response to infectious antigens and PHA stimulation and sensitization to DNCB was considered normal in two patients. DNCB sensitization occurred after 18 days in the oldest brother (16 years old) and only 25 days in the second brother (5 years old). The youngest brother, 2 years old, showed a normal response to PHA stimulation, a weak cutaneous reaction only to oidiomycin was found and the DNCB sensitization was not obtained. The possibility of a retarded and partial defect in the immune mechanism in patients with Hurler's syndrome during the first years of life is discussed.
