Cats were injected intravenously with metaraminol, an amine which depletes norepinephrine from the sympathetic nerve endings; their hearts were then perfused in vitro. Stimulation of the sympathetic nerve supply released metaraminol from the hearts, demonstrating that a synthetic compound can replace norepinephrine and serve as a transmitter at adrenergic nerve endings

L-Sorbose, an agent which induces colonial growth in Neurospora crassa, also induces structural changes in the cell wall. Acid hydrolyzates of cell walls isolated from sorbose-grown (colonial) hyphae contain more glucosamine and less glucose than do hydrolyzates of cell walls obtained from normally growing hyphae. Snail digestive juice, an agent which effects a structural change in the cell wall of N. crassa by liberating from it large quantities of glucose, has been found to induce colonial growth.
Actinomycin D inhibits the synthesis of ribonucleic acid in L cells and the yield of vaccinia virus containing deoxyribonucleic acid, but it does not inhibit cellular deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis or the multiplication of Mengo virus containing ribonucleic acid. These observations serve to distinguish the replication of viral ribonucleic from ribonucleic acid synthesis which is controlled by viral or cellular deoxyribonucleic acid.
In the fungus Neurospora crassa, hexagonal crystalline inclusions have been observed with both the light and electron microscopes. These crystals have been enriched by differential centrifugation and found to be identical with ergosterol by the criteria of ultraviolet spectral analysis and cytochemical analysis. Observations have been made on the distribution and fine structure of the crystalline bodies in various wild type and mutant strains of N. crassa.

The fine structure of vegetative mycelia of the filamentous Ascomycete, Neurospora crassa, has been investigated by the standard techniques of electron microscopy. Addition of uranyl nitrate to the methacrylate-embedding medium minimized disruption of the specimens-an accident often observed in the preparation of microbial material. This report describes the presence of a chitinous polysaccharide wall containing fine fibrils embedded in a homogeneous matrix. A sinuate plasma membrane lies adjacent to the inner wall surface. This membrane is often closely associated with the endoplasmic reticulum of the cytoplasm. Numerous mitochondria of the classical type, and dense particles of 10 mmicro diameter occur throughout the cytoplasm. The nuclear region is surrounded by a double membrane with pore openings. Associated with the nuclear envelope is a dense area, the nucleolus. The significance of these observations and their relationship to other forms is discussed.
