Malignant schwannomas are rare. These malignomas are primary nerve sheath tumors that usually arise from a peripheral nerve. They appear most frequently in the lower extremities, including the hips and buttocks (34.8%), the upper extremities (23.4%), and in the trunk (17%). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a malignant schwannoma of the rectum. We describe the rare disease with reference to the literature.
Primary leiomyosarcomas of the superficial soft tissues are very rare neoplasms. Because of the different biological behaviour, they should be divided into cutaneous and subcutaneous tumours. Differential diagnosis includes leiomyomas, skin metastases from extracutaneous leiomyosarcomas, and other spindle-cell tumours of the skin. Ultrastructural and immunohistochemical investigations are useful when light microscopic features do not allow an unequivocal diagnosis. Although local recurrences develop in almost half the patients with cutaneous leiomyosarcomas, the prognosis is predominantly good. In contrast, metastatic spread is more common in patients with subcutaneous leiomyosarcomas. Treatment for superficial leiomyosarcomas consists in wide excision. We report on a 76-year-old women with a local recurrence of a primary cutaneous leiomyosarcoma.
Biologically active, 3-H-thymidine-labeled Epstein-Barr virus has been purified by a method, specifically developed for these experiments, and used to infect the human lymphoid cell lines NC37 and Raji. At a late stage of this abortive infection (after 40 hr), 3-H-DNA has been recovered from the nuclei of the infected cells. This DNA has the density and size of free viral DNA. No evidence for integration was observed, in that less than 0,5 viral genome per cell had become covalently bound to cellular DNA. Simultaneously, the viral infection was studied by electron-microscopy.
