Induction of pneumonia in gnotobiotic calves following inoculation of Mycoplasma dispar and ureaplasmas (T-mycoplasmas).

Cloned cultures of Mycoplasma dispar and of Ureaplasma sp were inoculated endobronchially into gnotobiotic calves. The resulting pneumonia was estimated to involve 2 to 10 per cent of the lung although no clinical signs were observed. The histopathological lesions consisted of infiltration with mononuclear cells, cuffing (peribronchiolar lympho-reticular hyperplasia), catarrhal bronchiolitis and atelectasis. The results indicate that both M dispar and Ureaplasma sp are capable of causing sub-clinical cuffing pneumonia in calves.

The importance of picornavirus infections in respiratory disease of man and other mammals.

Picornaviruses may be divided, by physicochemical properties, into enteroviruses, cardioviruses, caliciviruses, rhinoviruses and foot-and-mouth diseases viruses. Although the respiratory tract may be the primary site of entry and multiplication for enteroviruses, cardioviruses and FMD viruses, few agents in these groups cause respiratory disease. A notable exception is coxsackievirus A21 which is an important cause of upper respiratory tract diseases in military recruits. The picornaviruses which most frequently cause respiratory illness are rhinoviruses and caliciviruses. There are over one hundred rhinovirus serotypes which infect man and they have been isolated from up to 50 percent of cases of mild respiratory illness, from 1-2 percent of healthy adults and from 5-10 percent of healthy children. About 10 percent of rhinovirus infections in adults are symptomless. The two bovine serotypes of rhinovirus and the two equine serotypes frequently infect cattle and horses respectively but seldom cause disease. Numerous calicivirus serotypes have been found in 17 percent of cats with respiratory disease and in 19 percent of clinically normal cats. However, experimental inoculation with caliciviruses has confirmed their causative role in respiratory disease of cats. The high rate of virus isolation from normal cats is probably due to their ability to carry virus in an infectious form for up to two years after initial infection and illness.

Immune electron microscopy of rhinoviruses.

Aggregates of three rhinovirus serotypes have been readily observed by utilizing the technique of immune electron microscopy. The aggregates generally fell into three categories: those with complete virions, those with "empty" capsids, and those in which the two types of particles were mixed.

New antigen-antibody system in Australia-antigen-positive hepatitis.

After detergent treatment the 42 nm. Dane particles from the sera of patients with serum hepatitis separate into an outer coat of Australia antigen (Au-Ag) and an inner spherical 27 nm. diameter component resembling a rhinovirus. Antibody in post-hepatitic serum reacted with the inner component (but not with the outer) to yield aggregates resembling those seen in the liver of patients with serum hepatitis. Antibody to Au-Ag was not detected, before or after the attack of hepatitis. It is suggested that, in an attack of serum hepatitis, Au-Ag antibody develops but is subsequently cleared; antibody against the inner Dane component, however, persists.

Studies of respiratory viruses in personnel at an Antarctic base.

Thirteen men wintering on an Antarctic base were isolated from other human contact for 10 months. During this period Coxsackievirus A21 and later influenza A2 virus were administered to some of the men. Serum samples were collected from each of the men at monthly intervals.Coxsackievirus A21 produced symptoms and apparently spread to uninoculated men. It also appears that repeated re-infections occurred and that the virus persisted in this small community for most of the period of isolation. HI antibody responses in the absence of neutralizing antibody responses seem to be transient. The vaccine strain of influenza virus induced antibody responses but did not cause symptoms. There was no evidence of spread to uninoculated men.Antibody titres against influenza C, parainfluenzaviruses 1 and 2 and coronavirus OC43 did not fall significantly during isolation. An outbreak of respiratory illness occurred at the end of isolation and its origin was traced. No causative agent was detected.

Rhinoviraemia.

Rhinoviruses have been isolated from the serum of two infants at necropsy. Failure to isolate viruses from ten other sera from infants who yielded rhinoviruses from their respiratory tracts suggests that true rhinoviraemia occurs rarely, and is infrequently associated with rhinovirus infections, both clinical and subclinical, and death. It is suggested that this is the first report of isolations of human rhinoviruses from the blood.
