The colour receptors in amblyopia investigated by specific quantitative perimetry.

With a method combining static colour perimetry and the two-colour threshold technique of Stiles, characteristic sensitivities of the cone mechanisms have been studied in amblyopic eye; the depression was more pronounced the higher the degree of amblyopia. For the blue cone mechanism no significant difference was found between the amblyopic and non-amblyopic eyes. For the red and green cone mechanisms, a central depression of sensitivity was found between the amblyopic and non-amblyopic eye, except at the fixation point where the mean threshold sensitivity was significantly higher in the amblyopic eye than in the leading eye. By registration of blue receptor curves, a distinct age factor was observed. In the younger patients (aged 10--16) the sensitivity level at peripheral positions for both the amblyopic and the non-amblyopic eye was significantly higher than in the older patients (aged 39--50). This difference is evidently due to the higher absorption of blue light in the ocular media in older patients. In our cases with eccentric fixation, the true fovea represents the relatively best sensitivity of the red as well as of the green cone mechanism.

Familial cerebro-macular degeneration (the Stengel-Batten-Mayou-Spielmeyer-Vogt-Stock disease). Evaluation of the photoreceptors.

In a material comprising seven patients with familial cerebro-macular degeneration a grave visual disability had developed within a few years after the onset of the disease, this being at 3 1/2 to 7 years of age. The night vision was only moderately reduced. A severe red-green colour vision defect was demonstrated in three patients. This is in accord with the loss of red and green cone responses found in one patient by chromatic adaptation studies. On the other hand, a remarkably good response of the blue cone system was registered. Normal pulse amplitudes were found by dynamic tonometry in four patients indicating good choroidal circulation. This supports the theory that the degeneration of the neuroepithelium is of primary type. The selectivity in loss of response functions being demonstrated here, might, however, also be related to parallel degenerations taking place in ganglion cells.

Refsum's disease. Eye manifestations in a patient treated with low phytol low phytanic acid diet.

The cardinal eye symptoms of Refsum's disease are night blindness, retinal pigmentary degeneration and constriction of the visual fields. Similarities with or differences from retinitis pigmentosa are discussed. A 39-year-old male has had manifestations of Refsum's disease from the age of 7 years and has been on a low phytol low phytanic acid diet for the last 13 years. Peripheral ring scotomas were present. Some reduction of the visual fields has been recorded, but only in the far periphery. The central field has not been significantly constricted during a 7-year period. Very good visual functions were found within this area. All cone mechanisms were functioning at a normal level. A moderately reduced sensitivity level of the rod mechanism could be explained in a great measure by poor pupillary dilation in the dark. In this patient minimal or no progression of the visual findings was apparent. Probably an effect of treatment, there is little resemblance with ordinary retinitis pigmentosa. ERG showed moderate abnormality. Normal conducting time was found by VER. With fluorescein angiography a central area of normal appearance was sharply outlined in contrast to marked degenerations in paracentral regions.

Laboratory infection of blackflies (Simuliidae) and midges (Chironomidae) by the mosquito mermithid, Romanomermis culicivorax.

Penetrating infective juveniles of Romanomermis culicivorax usually killed first-stage larvae of Chironomus maturus Johann., Chironomus sp., Simulium damnosum Theo., and S. venustum Say. Nematodes were melanized and died after they entered fourth stage larvae of 2 chironomid species, but no host reaction was evident after entry into fourth-stage blackfly larvae. In contrast, the nematodes initiated development in the latter hosts, which died before the nematodes completed their development.

Peroral toxicity of Orange RN in pigs. Early haemotological changes.

Earlier experiments with Orange RN in rats have shown several changes in the blood i.g. induction of Heinz bodies, methaemoglobinaemia and reduction of RBC (J.F. Gaunt et al., Fd. Cosmet. Toxicol., 1971, 9, 619). Similarly induction of Heinz bodies, reduction of RBC and a rise in reticulocytes were demonstrated at our institute in pigs following a few weeks administration of Orange RN (P. Olsen et al., Toxicology, 1973, 101, 249). The purpose of this study has been to investigate the degree and the induction time of Heinz bodies and changes in the number of reticulocytes and RBC in pigs during the first 18 days. After a few days marked alterations in the blood picture were seen. Heinz bodies increased from a few or none to 65% of the erythrocytes in the highest dose group (320 mg/kg bw/day) and to 30% in the lowest dose group (160 mg/kg bw/day). In addition a marked decrease in RBC and a rise in reticulocytes were seen in the highest dose group.

A study of the teratogenicity of butylated hydroxyanisole on rabbits.

A teratogenicity study on butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) was carried out in SPF New Zealand White rabbits. BHA was given by gavage from day 7--18 of the gestation period in doses of 0, 50, 200 and 400 mg/kg body wt./day. The fetuses were removed on day 28. No effect related to the treatment with BHA was observed on the number of corpora luteae, implantations, fetuses dead or alive, or on gross malformations, skeletal and internal malformations, and on the weight of the fetuses.

Familial syndrome of progressive cone dystrophy, degenerative liver disease, and endocrine dysfunction. III. Genetic studies.

A syndrome of progressive cone dystrophy, endocrine dysfunctions and degenerative liver diseases has been observed in seven patients, six of whom belonged to one extensive kindred. Genetic analyses revealed a segregation ratio indicating autosomal recessive inheritance of the syndrome, and the kindred from which six of the seven patients originated was heavily inbred. Thus, the results of the segregation analyses as well as of the inbreeding analyses provide evidence that this previously unrecognized disorder is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. Genetic marker analyses were conducted with respect to 22 marker systems, and linkage information was obtained with respect to 15 of them. No strong suggestion of linkage emerged from the analyses, but very close linkage could be excluded for several of genetic marker systems. Pedigree analysis was helpful in establishing the spectrum of clinical manifestations belonging to the syndrome proper. The data presently available suggest that elevated levels of creatine phosphokinase, which were found in all patients, may be useful in tracing heterozygotes for this disorder. This possibility will be further examined.

Calibration of the Goldmann perimeter and accessories used in specific quantitative perimetry.

With known radiometric data of the components of the projection perimeter and its accessories it is possible to perform spectral sensitivity measurements which are essential for the performance of quantitative colour perimetry. The authors describes modifications made the Goldmann perimeter for the performance of such measurements. The calibration data of the perimeter and accessories are given. A good fit between the CIE scotopic spectral sensitivity curve (V' lambda) and our experimental results for a dark adapted eye serves as a control of the calibration.

Characterization of rat bone marrow lymphoid cells. I. A study of the distribution parameters of sedimentation velocity, volume and electrophoretic mobility.

Various cell populations in rat bone marrow were characterized by means of a two dimensional separation using velocity sedimentation and free flow electrophoresis and by electrical sizing of the separated cells. Up to 4.5 mm/hr five different populations with discrete distributions in volume (coefficient of variation 10% to 13%) and sedimentation velocity (coefficient of variation 6% to 10%) were observed. Three of the small sized populations represented lymphocytes and small normoblasts and two of the larger sized populations represented myeloid cells. Almost all of these cells were in the G0/G1 cycle phase. In the faster sedimenting fractions which contained immature myeloid, erythroid and undefined blast cells and two S phase populations, discrete volume distributions were not evaluated. The cell populations with homogeneous volume (particularly the small lymphocytes) showed high density variations which condiserably impair the separation resolution. The cells sedimenting slower than 3.5 mm/hr were further separated by means of free flow electrophoresis into three peaks differing in electrophoretic mobility (EPM). The peaks of low and high EPM contained two populations and the peak of medium EPM contained three populations all characterized by normal volume distributions of uniform coefficient of variation between 11% and 14%. The small cells in the peaks of high and medium EPM were normolblasts and the other cells were lymphocytes. The biological significance of these results is discussed.

[A new method to avoid aspirations (author's transl)].

When treating accident victims and other high-risk patients there is always the danger of aspiration until intubation has been completed. An ancillary unit is described that can be connected to any type of tracheal aspirator, working on the principle of increasing the suction. Thus liquids and solid particles can always be sucked out quickly and effectively. In this way the danger of aspiration is considerably reduced or avoided altogether.
