Cushing's syndrome due to adrenocortical adenoma in a cat.

An 11-year-old spayed cat was presented with clinical signs suggestive of hyperadrenocorticism. Adrenocortical function was assessed by dexamethasone suppression and by stimulation with ACTH and the results provided a tentative diagnosis of adrenocortical tumour. Via laparotomy (paracostal approach), the enlarged right adrenal gland was removed. Histopathological diagnosis was adrenocortical adenoma.

Quantitation of lysozyme in the urine of the dog for the diagnosis of proximal tubular damage in renal disease.

The serum and urine LZM levels were determined with the lysoplate assay in 26 normal experimental dogs and in 21 dogs with various renal diseases. In the dogs with decreased glomerular filtration the serum LZM levels were higher than in normal dogs (less than or equal to 1.3 mg/l). No LZM could be demonstrated in the urine of normal dogs. The presence of LZM in urine was associated with proximal tubular damage, which indicates that LZM-uria can be used as an index of renal tubular damage.

[Abnormal respiration with dullness over the thorax in cattle. Due to an extensive lesion of the liver (author's transl)].

The case of a four-year-old cow is reported, in which a very extensive necropurulent lesion was localized in the left half of the liver. When the animal was studied clinically and by X-ray, a space-occupying lesion in the thorax was strongly suspected. The importance of including diseases of the liver in the differential diagnosis of thoracic disorders is stressed.

An infection with the lungworm Filaroides milksi Whitlock, 1956 (Nematoda: Metastrongyloidea) in a dog from Belgium.

A one-year-old male boxer coming from Belgium was presented at the Small Animal Clinic with signs of respiratory distress which had been present for three weeks. A radiograph of the thorax showed features of peribronchitis and infiltration in both lungs. In spite of antibiotic and supportive therapy the dog died. Postmortem examination of the lungs revealed a large number of nematodes in most of the bronchioles and alveoli. These nematodes were identified as filaroides milksi, Whitlock, 1956, a lungworm of dogs which has not been reported in Europe previously.

Amyloid in the corpora amylacea of the rat mammary gland.

Histochemical and electron microscope studies indicated there was amyloid in corpora amylacea in tumors, duct ectasias and lobular hyperplasias of rat mammary glands. Electron microscopy showed fibrils that closely resembled amyloid fibrils in human and bovine amyloid and in bovine corpora amylacea. Amyloid deposition may be more common in rats than is generally thought.

[Botulism in a number of yearlings (author's transl)].

An outbreak of botulism in four yearlings of a single herd is reported. One animal recovered spontaneously. The other animals underwent euthanasia (animal A) or were slaughtered (animals B and C). Cl. botulinum toxin type C was detected in the sera of animals A and B as well as in the liver and abomasal contents of animal A. In addition, Cl. botulinum was isolated from the liver of animal A. The symptoms are described. Total muscular weakness, also resulting in lingual paralysis and inability to swallow, was the most important clinical feature. The mechanism of action of Cl. botulinum toxin, possible methods of treatment and aspects of meat inspection are discussed.

Effects of trypan blue treatment on the immune responses of mice.

It has been reported that trypan blue treatment decreases the nonspecific resistance of mice to transplanted tumors and inhibits the in vitro cytotoxic activity of activated macrophages. We wished to determine whether this effect of trypan blue could be due to a selective inhibition of certain macrophage functions or whether it reflected a broader form of immunosuppression. We therefore tested the effects of trypan blue on a variety of immunological responses. Treatment of mice with trypan blue delayed their rejection of skin allografts and transplants of a highly antigenic syngeneic ultraviolet light-induced tumor. Trypan blue treatment of either donor or recipient decreased the local graft-versus-host reaction. Filtration of lymph node cells from trypan blue-treated donors on a nylon wool column before use in the graft-versus-host assay abrogated the depressive effect of trypan blue. A transient reduction in the blastogenic response of spleen cells to concanavalin A and lipopolysaccharide mitogens was observed after a single injection of trypan blue, but the response of lymph node cells was unaffected. The depressed response of splenic lymphocytes was not entirely reversed by removal of adherent cells. The primary and secondary hemagglutinin responses to sheep erythrocytes were unaffected in trypan blue-treated mice, and the proportion and phagocytic activity of thioglycolate-induced peritoneal macrophages were also unaltered. We conclude that treatment of mice with trypan blue selectively inhibits certain macrophage functions but, at high doses, it can also inhibit some lymphocyte activities.

Parallel intraylysosomal amyloid fibrils, a possible result of phagocytosis.

Vacuoles of mesenchymal cells in the papillae of bovine kidneys with amyloidosis were studied by histochemical electron microscopy for acid phosphatase as a marker for lysosomes. The vacuoles contained parallel amyloid fibrils. The vacuoles of reticular interstitial cells were found to be lysosomes. Vacuoles of macrophage-like cells of the same papillae were positive, partially positive, or negative for the enzyme activity. A suspension of papillary material was injected subcutaneously in rats in a 21-day light and electron microscopy and enzyme histochemistry study. Amyloid was demonstrated in vacuoles of macrophages throughout this period and initially also in neutrophils. In most vacuoles amyloid fibrils were randomly arranged but in others parallel arrangement was demonstrated. Amyloid was only at the inoculation sites. Intralysosomal bovine amyloid may occur in parallel fibrillar arrangement without a definite indication for amyloid production.
