The ADPglucose pyrophosphorylases of 7 plant-leaf tissues were partially purified and characterized. In all cases the enzymes showed stability to heat treatment at 65 degrees for 5 minutes in the presence of 0.02 m phosphate buffer, pH 7.0. The leaf ADPglucose pyrophosphorylases were activated 5 to 15-fold by 3-phosphoglycerate. Fructose-6-phosphate and fructose 1, 6-diphosphate stimulated ADPglucose pyrophosphorylase to lesser extents. The A(0.5) (conc of activator required to give 50% of the observed maximal activation) of 3-phosphoglycerate for the barley enzyme was 7 x 10(-6)m while for the sorghum enzyme it was 3.7 x 10(-4)m. Inorganic phosphate proved to be an effective inhibitor of ADPglucose synthesis. The I(0.5) (conc of inhibitor that gave 50% inhibition of activity for the various leaf enzymes varied from 2 x 10(-5)m (barley) to 1.9 x 10(-4)m (sorghum). This inhibition was reversed or antagonized by the activator 3-phosphoglycerate. These results form the basis for an hypothesis of the regulation of leaf starch biosynthesis.

Congenital middle ear encephalocele (CMEE) is a rare entity, previously reported in only 29 patients. It might originate from dehiscence of the tegmen tympani or antri or the bony plate of the posterior fossa. The common presenting symptoms are spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) otorrhea and/or rhinorrhea, persistent "serious otitis media," conductive hearing loss, and, occasionally, recurrent meningitis. We report a case of CMEE initially seen with progressive facial paresis, review the previously reported cases of CMEE, and discuss the pathogenesis and surgical management.

Choanal atresia is a well-known entity with various surgical approaches. The introduction of nasal endoscopic surgery made the endoscopic approach the most popular one because of excellent visualization and a good view of the choana to remove enough vomerian septal bone. Seven patients with choanal atresia were treated with 9 endoscopic procedures. Some practical operative details are described that can minimize the chance for restenosis.
A study was designed to investigate the muscular relations to the tonsil and tonsillar bed in man. Twenty-one histologically prepared human fetal specimens were examined. Muscle bundles from the palatopharyngeus and stylopharyngeus muscles and the amygdaloglossus muscle were found to relate to the tonsillar capsule in such a way as to suggest that during swallow, the tonsils may be moved laterally to permit a wide and unobstructed pharyngeal port.
Twenty-eight subjects with chronic respiratory disease were investigated for clinical data, ciliary beat frequency of nasal mucosa (10 cases), and ciliary ultrastructure. The cases were divided into two groups: those considered compatible with primary ciliary dyskinesia (genetic), and those not fitting into this category (others). A case was defined as genetic if one or more of the following were present: dextrocardia, ciliary beat frequency less than 10 Hz, or an average dynein arm count (outer, inner, or both) of less than two per ciliary cross-section. In each of the genetic cases at least two of these parameters were present. The percentage of malformed microtubules was calculated from the total number of evaluated cross-sections for each case. Ciliary microtubular abnormalities of any kind were no more frequent in cases of primary ciliary dyskinesia than in other cases. The same was true for transposition and radial spoke defects.
A case of bilateral subtotal thyroidectomy with acute respiratory distress is presented. The multiple etiological factors involved in causing this life-threatening emergency are discussed. Bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy was successfully treated conservatively by nasotracheal intubation. Tracheostomy was not necessary.
