Zinc-dependent chemotactic defect in an infant with acrodermatitis.

A 5-month-old infant developed acrodermatitis enteropathica when weaned from breast milk to cows' milk. Plasma zinc concentration was low. T- and B-lymphocyte functions were normal, but there was a severe defect of neutrophil chemotaxis. Oral treatment with zinc sulphate (40 mg daily) induced an immediate clinical improvement, with restoration of normal plasma zinc level and complete correction of neutrophil chemotaxis.

[Pollutants in biological fluids].

The AA. report the gaschromatographic determination of some metal hazards encountered in the environment, as berylliu, chromium, manganese, cobalt, nickel, tin, lead, mercury and others. They develop the rapid method by Hansen et al. for the analysis of sub-nanogram amounts of chromium with the formation from blood of chromium trifluoroacetylacetonate Cr(tfa)3 and quantitation of this chelate using electron-capture GLC. Particularly different samples of chrome tanning workers blood are tested. Informations are provided concerning the equipment, operating parameters, sensitivity, interferences and the approximate time required for this method and the correspondent using the atomic absorption spectrometry.

The microbial degradation of phenylalkanes. 2-Phenylbutane, 3-phenylpentane, 3-phenyldodecane and 4-phenylheptane.

1. Two Pseudomonas strains capable of utilizing 2-phenylbutane, 3-phenylpentane and 4-phenylheptane as the sole carbon and energy source were isolated. 2. Two Nocardia strains capable of utilizing only 3-phenyldodecane as the sole carbon and energy source were isolated. 3. All the isolated strains were unable to grow on the corresponding phenylalkane-p-sulphonates. 4. From liquid cultures of Pseudomonas strains utilizing 2-phenylbutane, 2-(2,3-dihydro-2,3-dihydroxyphenyl)butane was isolated and identified. Evidence for a meta cleavage of the benzene ring was also obtained. 5. From liquid cultures of Pseudomonas strains utilizing 3-phenylpentane, 3-(2,3-dihydro-2,3-dihydroxyphenyl)pentane and 2-hydroxy-7-ethyl-6-oxonona-2,4-dienoic acid were isolated and identified. 6. Evidence for the formation of both a diol and a meta-cleavage compound was obtained from liquid cultures of both Pseudomonas strains utilizing 4-phenylheptane. 7. Liquid cultures of both Nocardia strains utilizing 3-phenyldodecane never formed a diol or a semialdehyde-related compound. 2-Phenylbutyric acid, 3-phenylvaleric acid and 4-phenylhexanoic acid were shown to be present in these cultures.

Dextro-gamma-carboxymethyl-gamma-methyl-delta-alpha-butenolide. A 1,2-ring-fission product of 4-methylcatechol by Pseudomonas desmolyticum.

1. (+)-gamma-Carboxymethyl-gamma-methyl-Delta(alpha)-butenolide was isolated from resting-cell cultures of Pseudomonas desmolyticum incubated in the presence of 5-methylsalicylic acid. 2. The structure of this metabolite was deduced from physical and chemical evidence. 3. The isolated compound must be formed in an enzymic reaction since it shows optical activity. 4. The degradative pathway of 4-methylcatechol by Ps. desmolyticum is discussed.
