Boron carbonitride nanofibers: synthesis, characterization, and photoluminescence properties.

Large-scale highly aligned boron carbonitride (BCN) nanofibers with controllable orientations and chemical compositions were synthesized directly on nickel substrates from a gas mixture of N2, H2, CH4, and B2H6 by plasma-enhanced hot filament chemical vapor deposition. The morphology of the BCN nanofibers was examined by scanning electron microscopy, the microstructures were studied by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and the bonding states as well as chemical compositions were determined by electron energy loss spectroscopy. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the photoluminescent properties of BCN nanofibers that shows that they are interesting blue- and violet-light-emitting materials with tunable wavelengths. Further studies on field electron emission suggest that BCN nanofibers are also promising candidates for field emission sources.

[Influence of cleftpalate on middle ear conduction and eustachian function].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the influence and its degree of cleftpalate on middle ear conduction and eustachian function. METHOD: 41 cleftpalate patients (82 ears) were performed with otopharyngeal examinations, form of the ostium pharyngeum tubae auditivae observations and acoustic impedance measurements. The results were compared with healthy persons of normal hearing. RESULT: In the cases with cleftpalate, tympanic membrane pathological change incidence was 89.0% (73/82), ostium pharyngeum tubae auditivae of cracked shape was 59.5% (25/42), abnormal tympanogram was 83.1% (64/77), the negative rate of stapedius muscle reflex was 84.4% (65/77). There are significant different in comparison with healthy persons. In synthetic analyses, the rate of secretory otitis media with varied degree in the cleftpalate cases was 74.0% (57/77). CONCLUSION: There was a high incidence of middle ear pathological change and secretory otitis media in the cleftpalate patients. This high incidence was due to susceptivity of the nasopharynx on the infection, weak strength of the dilator tubae eustachii and the deformed shape of the ostium pharyngeum tubae auditivae.

[Electron-microscopic study of the vestibular dark and wall cells].

The ultrastructure of the dark cells and wall cells in the vestibular apparatus of the healthy guinea pigs (21 ears) and disordered guinea pigs (12 ears) were observed using transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that otoconia were absorbed mainly by the dark cells, secondly the wall cells. A non-cellular substance was found on the surface of the dark and wall cells and in the endolymphatic space. Probably this substance is related to the absorption of otoconia, particularly the disordered otoconia.

[Pressure wave-induced damage of the vestibular apparatus in guinea pigs. A transmission electron microscopic study].

Guinea pigs were exposed to pressure wave with a peak pressure value of 175.3dB (SPL). Vestibular test and stereoscopic and TEM observations were performed after the exposure. Vestibular function was normal. Within 48 hours of exposure, slight mechanical injuries of the sensory cells in both the creista and macula were observed, such as displacement of the otolithic membrane, distortion and fusion of cilia and protrusion of the cytoplasm. On the 7th and 14th day, these changes became less marked, but a few cells showed swelling of mitochondria and nerve chalice and abnormalities of afferent nerve terminals, which were supposed to be resulted from metabolic disorders. The significance of these changes was discussed.

Boron carbonitride nanotubes.

A comprehensive understanding of the design, synthesis, characterization, and properties of boron carbonitride nanotubes (BCN) is presented in this review. Distinctive structural and electronic properties are revealed in theoretical studies of the BCN nanotubes and compared with the properties of carbon nanotubes. In the experimental studies, BCN nanotubes have been synthesized by various techniques. For different purposes, controllable growth processes have been used to fabricate BCN nanotubes with novel structures, such as nanojunctions and filled nanotubes. Some interesting phenomena originating from the substitution of B and N atoms, such as the phase segregation, are considered theoretically and experimentally. Mainly the physical properties--field electron emission and photoluminescence--are discussed, which turn out to have potential applications in the industry.
