The processes of charge redistribution in phospholipid bilayer membranes have been examined by voltage clamping. Different types of phospholipids dissolved in n-decane were used as membranes and the membranes were made conducting by adding ionophores. The relaxation processes were found to be composed of at least two exponential decays of which the fast process can be explained in terms of a charge redistribution between the surface layers and the interior of the membrane, following the step in potential. The effect on this of varying the lipid composition, the external solution conditions and the applied potential are described in terms of changes in the capacitance CP and the resistance RP of the surface layers. A model in which a structural rearrangement of the lipid polar groups is responsible for the observed changes in CP and RP is also discussed.
A clinical study of 44 eyes in 22 patients with cortisone-induced glaucoma confirmed the importance of the duration of employ of the corticoid. Those patients who had instilled the medication for less than 8 weeks recovered normal ocular tension after discontinuation of the corticoid. On the contrary, those who had employed the corticoid for more than 4 years did not regain normal ocular tension, and medical treatment, or even surgical therapy in a large number of cases, had to be employed. The frequency of congenital anomalies of the angle has to be emphasized, particularly persistence of the pectinate ligament. Papilla asymmetry was noted in a large percentage of cases, and was related to the difference in the stage of evolution of the eyes. The appearance of the papilla has important prognostic value. Of the patients with abnormal papilla, 61.9 p. cent had normal ocular tension after stopping treatment, but normal tension did not appear in patients with anexcavated and apale papilla. The authors consider trabeculotomy to be the operation of choice in cortisone induced glaucoma, but this tends to be ineffective in young patients because of sclerous and/or conjunctival blocking.
When hemocyanin is added to a black lipid film, the conductance increases in discrete steps. For negative potentials the single step conductance is constant, but for positive potentials the step conductance appears to decrease as the potential increases. At high positive potentials the conductance fluctuates between several levels. These data suggest that, in lipid membranes, hemocyanin conducts ions through discrete channels. The voltage-dependent conductance observed at high levels of conductance seems to be a consequence of the properties of the conductance of the single channel.

Trichophyton soudanense is a dermatophyte wich is of highest incidence in Africa. Cases of tinea produced by this fungus have been described in England, Switzerland, Germany, Australia, the United States and Brazil. This investigation reports the first isolation of this fungus in Venezuela, from a lesion of the nail in a female patient who has always resided in Venezuela. The identification of this fungus was based on macroscopic and microscopic morphological characteristics; biological properties, scare or no growth when the only nitrogen source in the culture medium is provided by potassium or ammonium nitrate, and the production of dark pigment when inoculated in Lowenstein-Jensen medium. Experimental innoculation in animals produced an endothrix parasitism of the hair. Reference is made ot the incidence of the most frequently occuring dermatophytes in Venezuela.

Clinical pathways have long been used as a mechanism for implementing a managed care delivery system. They have been effective in highlighting lengths of stay, outcome variances, and systems problems. Clinical pathways play an important part in enhancing quality improvement activities, especially in accordance with the standards of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. This article addresses benefits of clinical pathways in general, and benefits at the authors' facility in particular, specifically, a clinical pathway's effectiveness in influencing readmissions of patients with atrial fibrillation.
The recently developed methods of non radioactive in situ hybridization of chromosomes offer new aspects for chromosome analysis. Fluorescent labelling of hybridized chromosomes or chromosomal subregions allows to facilitate considerably the detection of specific chromosomal abnormalities. For many biomedical applications (e.g. biological dosimetry in the low dose range), a fast scoring for aberrations (e.g. dicentrics or translocations) in required. Here, we present an approach depending on fluorescence in situ hybridization of isolated suspension chromosomes that indicates the feasibility of a rapid screening for specific chromosomes or translocations by slit scan flow cytometry. Chromosomes of a Chinese hamster x human hybrid cell line were hybridized in suspension with biotinylated human genomic DNA. This DNA was decorated with FITC by a double antibody system against biotin. For flow cytometry the chromosomes were stabilized with ethanol and counterstained with DAPI or propidium iodide (PI). An experimental data set of several hundred double profiles was obtained by two parameter slit scan flow cytometry and evaluated automatically. The evaluation algorithm developed allowed a classification of chromosomes according to the number of centromeres and their chromosomal positions in less than 1 msec per individual profile. Approximately 20% of the measured DAPI profiles showed a bimodal distribution with a significant centromeric dip indicating a "normal" chromosomal morphology and a correct alignment in the flow system. In many cases, profiles of a "normal" bimodal fluorescence distribution of the DNA stain (DAPI, PI) were correlated with a "normal" FITC profile. Due to their centromeric indices these profiles agreed well to the expected human chromosomes of the cell line. In some cases of "normal" DAPI (PI) profiles, "aberrant" FITC profiles were observed.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
Fat free mass (FFM) predicted by five bioelectrical impedance (BIA) available formulae (Segal et al., Lukaski et al., Kushner et al., Deurenberg et al., manufacturer's predictive equation) was compared with densitometrically-determined FFM (as a reference method) in two groups of young women with different anthropometric characteristics. In the farmers (very short and light individuals), none of the studied formulae was able to accurately predict FFM: this latter was overestimated in subjects with low and underestimated in those with high FFM. In the other group (INCAP employees), only values predicted by Lukaski formula were in perfect agreement with FFM, showing no bias depending on FFM changes. In conclusion, the available BIA formulae seem to be specific for population from which they were derived and could not be used on samples from other populations if not cross-validated.
