The sexual interaction of women with secondary orgasmic dysfunction and their partners.

This paper reports the sexual interaction of 48 couples in which the women had secondary orgasmic dysfunction and the men reported no difficulties in sexual functioning. The results were contrasted with a sample of 63 "sexually satisfied" couples. On the Sexual Interaction Inventory, male and female members of the dysfunctional couples reported greater dissatisfaction with the frequency and range of specific sexual activities engaged in than their counterparts in the normative sample. Males in the dysfunctional group rated their sexual pleasure slightly higher than the norm, whereas the dysfunctional females' ratings were below average on this dimension. Within the dysfunctional group, males reported low self-acceptance and mate acceptance, while the females were less accepting of themselves but more accepting of their mates' responsivity. The female members of the dysfunctional couples had an average knowledge of their partners' sexual preferences, whereas the males were less accurate than the normative group in their perceptions of their partners' sexual preferences. As expected, the dysfunctional group reported greater overall disharmony and dissatisfaction in their sexual interaction. Implications of these findings for future research are discussed.

Plasma viscosity in ischemic heart disease.

Plasma viscosity was measured by the capillary method in 108 patients with ischemic heart disease. The highest value of plasma viscosity was found in 11 patients with severe unstable angina (1.66 +/- 0.068), while in 18 patients with less severe unstable angina plasma viscosity was lower (1.61 +/- 0.056; p less than 0.025). In 43 patients with acute myocardial infarction plasma viscosity was 1.53 +/- 0.10, significantly lower than in the two groups with unstable angina (p less than 0.005). In 36 patients with stable angina plasma viscosity was 1.42 +/- 0.089, similar to that found in 100 normal subjects. Plasma viscosity did not increase in 30 ischemic heart disease patients during exercise-induced myocardial ischemia. It is suggested that the elevated plasma viscosity in unstable angina demonstrated in this study compromises the oxygen delivery to the myocardium and coronary blood flow and therefore may possibly be a factor in the pathophysiology of this syndrome.

Variation of levels of mRNA coding for antenna and reaction center polypeptides in Rhodopseudomonas capsulata in response to changes in oxygen concentration.

The effect of oxygen tension on the transcription of genes coding for the photosynthetic apparatus of Rhodopseudomonas capsulata was determined by the Southern hybridization technique. Restriction endonuclease digests of the R-prime plasmid pRPS404 and a subcloned fragment thereof served as DNA probes for genetically defined regions. The results showed that transcripts corresponding to the genes for certain pigment-binding polypeptides increase in amount by about 40-fold after a drop in oxygen tension. Transcripts hybridizing to genes involved in bacteriochlorophyll biosynthesis increase to a much lesser extent, and several genes involved in carotenoid biosynthesis are not affected by pO2.

Low serum creatine phosphokinase values in patients with acute viral hepatitis.

Low values of serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK) were found in a group of 27 patients suffering from acute viral hepatitis. The values were significantly lower than CPK values in a group of 25 patients with extra hepatic obstructive jaundice (23.3 +/- 32.1 versus 163 +/- 43 U/L, p less than 0.001). CPK values in the hepatitis group when recovered (6 months after hospitalization) were much higher than the mean CPK levels in the same group during the acute illness (178 +/- 28 versus 23.3 +/- 32.1 U/L, p less than 0.001) and were the same as a control group of 26 healthy volunteers (179 +/- 28 versus 179 +/- 20.9 U/L). Similar results were found when the groups were divided into separate male and female groups. Serum CPK values, thus, were found to be a useful diagnostic tool to distinguish between patients with intrahepatic jaundice due to acute viral hepatitis and patients with extra hepatic obstructive jaundice.

The effects of sex education on women with secondary orgasmic dysfunction.

This study evaluated the effects of sex education on 48 couples in which the women reported secondary orgasmic dysfunction. None of the males had a problem with premature ejaculation or with erectile dysfunction. Couples received two, two-hour sessions of sex education during a one-week period. From measures administered before and after treatment, the women reported significantly increased orgasmic frequency and decreased sexual anxiety. The males reported a significant increase in the duration of intercourse and in oral-genital sexual stimulation. None of the subject characteristics significantly predicted overall change. The findings underscored the important role of sex education in facilitating positive changes in a woman's orgasmic frequency and in a sexual relationship. Future research should assess the relative meaningfulness of the various components of the sex education package.

Reconstitution of carotenoids into the light-harvesting pigment-protein complex from the carotenoidless mutant of Rhodopseudomonas as sphaeroides R26.

Two carotenoids, neurosporene and spheroidene, have been successfully added to chromatophores from the carotenoidless mutant of Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides R26. Carotenoids reconstituted in this way into the B-850 light-harvesting pigment-protein complex both sensitive bacteriochlorophyll fluorescence and protect the complex from the photodynamic reaction.

Glycoproteins and human cancer: II. Correlation between circulating level and disease status.

Many cancer patients have elevated serum protein and sialic acid (N-acetyl neuraminic acid, NANA) levels. Serial determinations were performed, using serum treated with perchloric acid from 34 patients with widespread metastatic disease. Six of six patients who underwent debulking surgery had a drop in their serum NANA value to normal levels following a transient rise in the immediate postoperative period. Twenty-eight patients received chemotherapy and had serial NANA determinations over periods ranging from 4 to 12 months. Eleven of 28 patients demonstrated tumor regression or stable disease. Ten of the 11 in this group had a drop in their serum NANA level. The remaining 17 patients showed tumor progression, and serum NANA rose in 11 of 12 patients with widespread progression of metastatic disease. This elevation preceded clinical relapse in 8 of the 11 patients. Elevation did not occur in four of five patients with a local site relapse of disease (two chest wall, one lung mass, one brain metastases). Serial serum glycoprotein titers deserve further consideration as a monitor of response to chemotherapy of metastatic disease.

Fractionation of the rat liver enzymes that hydrolyze benzoyl-arginine-2-naphthylamide.

1. The enzyme activity in the particulate fraction from rat liver that hydrolyzes alpha-N-benzoyl-DL-arginine-2-naphthylamide (Bz-Arg-NNap) has been separated into two approximately equal components by chromatography on DEAE-cellulose. One component (peak II) is completely retained by the column at low ionic strength while the other component (peak I) passes through. 2. In contrast to the enzyme in peak I, the enzyme in peak II is extremely sensitive to inhibition by leupeptin, it will hydrolyze carbobenzoxy-alanylarginylarginyl-4-methoxy-2-naphthylamine, and it will inactivate aldolase. 3. There appears to be also a minor high molecular weight component of the alpha-N-benzoyl-DL-arginyl-2-naphthylamine-hydrolyzing activity that is retained by the DEAE-cellulose but which has properties similar to those of the peak I enzyme.

Brain transplantation: prolonged survival of brain after carotid-jugular interposition.

Six isolated canine brains were successfully transplanted for 6 hours to 2 days to the cervical vasculature of dogs. Viability was shown by electrocortical activity and significant uptakes of oxygen and glucose, with production of carbon dioxide. Cerebral blood flows, temperatures, and pressures of the cerebral homograft were continuously monitored by way of an implantable recording module.
