Identification of type I resistance to Fusarium head blight controlled by a major gene located on chromosome 4A of Triticum macha.

Using a set of 21 substitution lines of Triticum macha in a 'Hobbit Sib' background, it was previously demonstrated that chromosome 4A of T. macha carries significant resistance to Fusarium head blight. In the present study, the T. macha 4A resistance was further characterized in a 'Hobbit Sib' (T. macha 4A) single-recombinant chromosome doubled haploid (DH) population. Lines were phenotyped for disease resistance, yield components and deoxynivalenol (DON) mycotoxin content over two consecutive seasons. Both resistance to spread and resistance to initial infection were examined, and it was established that the resistance residing on T. macha 4A is predominantly of type I (resistance to initial infection). It was demonstrated that this type I resistance significantly lowered levels of DON accumulation in the grain and improved yield components under high disease pressure. Genotyping the DH lines using microsatellite genetic markers enabled the location of the gene(s) for resistance to be assigned to a region of the short arm of chromosome 4A, distal to microsatellite marker Xgwm601 and co-segregating with microsatellite marker Xgwm165 in this population.

Spirituality.

At the present time, there is a widening search for spirituality as distinct from organized religion, particularly as it relates to well-being, wholeness, and healing. In both professional and lay contexts, spirituality has come to the forefront of public consciousness. The place of spirituality within the hospice movement is not unaffected by this shift in popular priorities. Once the prerogative of chaplains and clergy, the nurturing of spiritual journeys is now becoming a common concern. Experiencing sensory spirituality can provide both caregivers and those for whom they care a blessed respite for bodies, minds, and spirits.

Malignant nerve sheath tumor containing endocrine cells.

A malignant nerve sheath tumor occurred in the thigh of a 29-year-old man who had the stigmata of von Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis. Chondroid foci, rhabdomyoblasts, and mucus-containing acini were identified in the tumor. Argyrophil cells and somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were present in acinar epithelium. Endocrine type granules were found in epithelial cells on ultrastructural examination. This is an example of a so-called "glandular schwannoma" and is unique in that it contained somatostatin-immunoreactive cells. A neural crest derivation is suggested for this complex tumor.

Introduction of computer facilities to a clinical chemistry laboratory.

A clinical chemistry laboratory information system based on MUMPS is described, together with the problems associated with its implementation. Tabular displays and cusum charts as well as cumulative records are available on a real-time basis. Data capture is by both on-line and off-line techniques. After 18 months' live running the management of information within the laboratory has been significantly improved.

Effect of parenteral amino acid supplementation in alcoholic hepatitis.

A controlled randomized study was performed in 15 patients with biopsy-proven alcoholic hepatitis to determine the effect of the administration of a parenteral amino acid-glucose solution for 1 month on nutritional, clinical, biochemical and histological parameters. All patients were allowed ad libitum consumption of a hospital diet. Five patients received the amino acid-glucose solution, while 10 received the glucose solution without amino acids. There was more improvement in nitrogen balance in the treated group than the control group. However, amino acid therapy was no more beneficial than control therapy in improving creatinine-height index, arm muscle area, arm fat area, and plasma levels of retinol binding proteins, prealbumin and pyridoxal-5'-phosphate. Clinical and biochemical markers of liver disease improved in both groups. This improvement in composite clinical index was more rapid in the treated than in the control group, but this early advantage was no longer apparent at the end of one month. Hepatocellular necrosis, inflammation and fat improved in the entire group. Amino acid treatment resulted in a greater resolution of fatty infiltration, but did not otherwise affect hepatic histology. Hepatocellular necrosis and inflammation in both the initial and final liver biopsies were highly correlated with nitrogen balance on admission. Initial clinical index correlated with the quantity of ethanol consumption prior to admission but not with liver injury on biopsy. However, by the end of the study, clinical index correlated with hepatocellular necrosis and inflammation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
