Hepatic sinusoidal dilatation in Hodgkin's disease.

Examination of needle liver biopsy specimens from 46 patients with Hodgkin's disease revealed sinusoidal dilatation with a predominantly centrolobular and midlobular localisation in 23 cases (50%). It was present in 90% of patients with general symptoms and in only 20% of those without them (p less than 0.001), and it was unrelated to the staging, the existence of hepatic infiltration by the disease and the lymph node histology. The pathogenesis of the sinusoidal ectasia is not known, but it might be a consequence of an alteration of the sinusoidal barrier, since no abnormality of the hepatocytes or of the hepatic venules was detected at light microscopy. Sinusoidal dilatation may be considered as a further systemic manifestation of Hodgkin's disease.

Main autopsy findings in bone marrow transplant patients.

The autopsy findings in 24 cases (representing 17 males and seven females) that underwent bone marrow transplantation during the course of disease are reported. The mean age of the patients was 20.0 years, with individual ages ranging from 7 to 40 years. In 23 cases, serious infectious disease occurred. A patient frequently exhibited more than one type of infection. In total, there were seven mycotic, eight cytomegalovirus, and 15 bacterial infections. Twenty-three cases showed striking lung pathology, the most prevalent lesions being infectious diseases and those of diffuse alveolar damage, which was found in ten cases. Gastrointestinal tract pathology of differing types was observed in 13 cases. Necrotizing enterocolitis was observed in three of these cases. Three cases also displayed cholangiolar cholestasis, probably related to their terminal infectious disease. In only two cases could graft-vs-host disease be proved histologically.

Formulation of a barrier cream against chromate.

A topical cosmetic cream has been developed for use on patients occupationally sensitized to chromate. With the components of this preparation, an in vitro study was carried out, which demonstrated the efficiency of each component. An in vivo experiment on 25 volunteer patients proved a failure. The formula was modified to produce a new cream. The in vitro and in vivo experiences showed satisfactory results in 60 volunteer patients, 60% of whom benefitted from using it.

Combined study of lymphocyte phosphoglucomutase (PGM) and adenylate kinase (AK) isoenzymes in the early characterization of bone marrow engraftment.

A starch-gel electrophoretic study of 2 peripheral blood lymphocyte enzymes, phosphoglucomutase (PGM) and adenylate kinase (AK), was performed in 25 donor-recipient allogenic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) pairs. A different isoenzymatic pattern between donor and recipient for PGM, AK or both, was observed in 11 of these 25 pairs. From these 11 cases, an identical donor isoenzyme pattern was observed in 10 cases between 24 and 85 days (mean 41.8, SD 22.08) after BM infusion confirming engraftment, whereas in the remaining 1 the demonstration could not be substantiated due to early death. The present study demonstrates that, in addition to other cell markers, the simultaneous study of PGM and AK isoenzymes allows confirmation of BM engraftment in about 45% of cases, much earlier than is possible by means of red cell antigen analysis. Moreover, it is a simple, relatively inexpensive and rapid laboratory tool for a better characterization of the established chimera.

[Prophylaxis of patients with sensitization to chrome and nickel using a cosmetic preparation for topical use].

Firstly we showed the reason for the choice of each product used in the preparation of this cosmetic. After this we studied "in vitro" the effect of this preparation, and "in vivo" in 25 patients sensitive to Potassium dichromate. On seeing the null effect of this preparation, owing to the oxidation of ascorbic acid, on these 25 patients, we modified the formula, substituting the ascorbic acid and EDTA, respectively, for tartaric acid and glycine. The respective tests "in vitro" and "in vivo" on 20 patients, this time showed beneficial effect of this preparation in 60% of the patients tested. Of these 60%, a 25% have continue to work exposed to the allergen (dichromate or nickel) and the other 35% have continue working with lesions controlled by habitual topic therapy. This preparation can also be used, with less effect, for nickel.

[Extrapulmonary manifestations of 'Mycoplasma pneumoniae' (author's transl)].

Authors present a six year old girl with a 'Mycoplasma pneumoniae' infection who developed neurologic and cardiac complications. Clinic presentation, physical examination and laboratory data are revised. Clinic course was satisfactory and the child was asymptomatic two months later in out-patient control.
