A morphological study of the lymphocyte traffic in Peyer's patches after an in vivo antigenic stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Lymphoid cells have often been observed in the intestinal lumen and it has been hypothesized that M cells could represent one of the most important migration routes for the immunocompetent cells from the lymphoid follicle to the lumen. However, a direct evidence of the passage was lacking. In this study we describe a morphological analysis of the lymphocyte traffic in rabbit Peyer's patches after an in vivo stimulation with an antigen normally not present in the intestine. METHODS: The antigenic stimulation of a large number of Peyer's patches was carried out using the isolated ileal loop technique and then the samples from stimulated and control Peyer's patches were analysed by light and transmission electron microscopy. RESULTS: We have been able to describe details of lymphocyte migration through M cells, from the follicle to the intestinal lumen, and a marked increase of intraluminal lymphocytes by counting the immunocompetent cells after periods of antigenic stimulation of varying lengths. CONCLUSIONS: Our finding is that the passage of lymphocytes to the lumen is an antigen-dependent event and we also provide direct evidence that M cells are one of the migration routes. Our observations also indicate that lymphoid cells in the intestinal lumen may play an immunologic role in mucosal immunity.

Endocrine tissue associated with the pancreatic ductal system: a light and electron microscopic study of the adult rat pancreas with special reference to a new endocrine arrangement.

BACKGROUND: A substantial part of the endocrine pancreas has been previously described as being located either close to the excretory ducts as small clusters of endocrine cells and as Islets of Langerhans, or associated with the ducts as single endocrine cells scattered through the ductal epithelium. METHODS: Four Wistar white adult rats were sacrificed and perfused via the thoracic aorta with 2.5% glutaraldehyde. After the usual treatment for the transmission electron microscopy, pieces of pancreas were sectioned consecutively for light microscopy. Consecutive ultrathin sections were performed in the most interesting cases. RESULTS: The observations previously reported were confirmed. In addition, a new endocrine arrangement was detected and described as buds of endocrine cells (mainly B-cells) protruding from the ductal epithelium into the surrounding tissue. CONCLUSIONS: The authors propose to explain the endocrine buds as components of the gastro-entero-pancreatic system or as a stage of an endocrine pancreatic "neo-histogenesis" occurring in the adult rat pancreas.

A morphological study of the primary cilia in the rat pancreatic ductal system: ultrastructural features and variability.

Primary cilia in the pancreas of the rat were studied by transmission electron microscopy. Their presence is very common, and each ductal cell seems to be provided with a single cilium. The basal body showed anchoring apparatus such as transitional fibers and basal feet. The shaft can show a number of different patterns according to the level of the sections. Proceeding towards the tip, the microtubules decrease in number, although not always in the same way. Near the tip, it is possible to detect patterns, with only 1 microtubule. Three kinds of tips are described. The function of the cilia is discussed.

Bilateral Acanthamoeba keratitis in a gas-permeable contact lens wearer.

Acanthamoeba keratitis is an uncommon but potentially devastating complication of contact lens wear that has been reported with increasing frequency since its first description in 1974. We describe a case of bilateral Acanthamoeba keratitis, which occurred in a 24-year-old man, wearing gas-permeable contact lenses. This is to our knowledge the first case of Acanthamoeba keratitis reported in Italy, and the fourth bilateral case reported in the literature. Medical therapy (carried out after the first week by a different institution, due to the absence of essential antiamebic drugs on the Italian market) was effective in stopping the progression of the disease.

[An outpatient regimen for dental improvements in patients with valvular cardiopathies and oral anticoagulant therapy (a preliminary note)].

The purpose of this paper is to verify the level of confidence of a new approach to the management of patients with cardiovalvular prosthetic and oral treatment with anticoagulants during high level risk oral surgery procedures. The new protocol includes: interrupted oral anticoagulant treatment; ambulatory regimen instead of hospital regimen; special dentistry management. No hemorrhagic complications occurred in the study sample. This paper concludes with a review of the role of Quick test in the management of patients with cardiac prostheses.

An evaluation of the effect of the adhesive luting on microleakage of the IPS empress crowns.

In an ongoing search for improved aesthetics, new materials and techniques are being developed and evaluated for clinical application; all-ceramic crown systems are among them. This paper presents an in vitro evaluation of the effect of dentin and porcelain bonding, with luting resin, on microleakage of porcelain crowns. Clinical application is discussed, and three cases are used to illustrate the procedure. The learning objective of this article is to enhance the knowledge of the more recent developments in dental materials and application techniques.

Histotopographic and ultrastructural study on the lymphatic network of the pancreas in the guinea pig.

The localization of absorbing lymph vessels was studied in the normal guinea pig pancreas by light microscopy (serial semithin sections) and transmission electron microscopy (ultrathin sections). Absorbing lymph vessels were observed both in the interlobular and intralobular areas where they can be localized close to the adenomeres. Lymph vessels were also seen in the interlobular areas located next to the islets of Langerhans and to groups of endocrine cells (n = 8-10) not showing a vascular organization comparable with islets of Langerhans. All lymph vessels in the pancreas are absorbing lymph vessels, characterized by a very thin endothelial wall, anchoring filaments and the absence of a definitive basal membrane. Adjacent endothelial cells form end-to-end, overlapping and interdigitating intercellular junctions. Valves were present both in the interlobular and intralobular lymph vessels.

A 5-year report on a enamel-dentinal bonding agent and microfilled resin system.

The aim of this study was to examine the clinical performance of the Gluma enamel dentinal bonding system and Pekalux microfilled composite resin. Sixty esthetic restorations were placed by three different operators. After 5 years of clinical performance, 40 restorations were evaluated. Alpha scores were given to 25 restorations for marginal integrity, 21 for color stability, and 27 for anatomic form. Bravo scores were given to 11 restorations for marginal integrity, 13 for color stability, and 10 for anatomic form. Six restorations had to be replaced. The results of this study reveal the importance of the periodic maintenance of restorations; every patient was reexamined, underwent conservative restoration polishing, and attended an oral hygiene session every 6 months.

Cement thickness and microleakage under metal-ceramic restorations with a facial butted margin: an in vivo investigation.

Ten metal-ceramic restorations with buccal porcelain butt margins and palatal metal beveled margins were fabricated for periodontally hopeless teeth. After cementation, the experimental crowns remained in the oral environment for 3 to 6 months; the teeth were then extracted and used for microscopic and microleakage evaluation. All ten crowns showed at least a small amount of microleakage, but adaptation of beveled margins proved to be superior to that of shoulder porcelain margins.

[Treatment of dysfunctional metrorrhagia with GnRH analogs].

Thirty patients diagnosed as affected by dysfunctional metrorrhagia were treated with goserelin in a registered formulation of 3.6 mg injected subcutaneously into the anterior abdominal wall. These patients suffered from hypochromic anemia secondary to metrorrhagia with asthenic symptoms. After six months' treatment there was a significant improvement in hemocrasia and symptoms resolved without collateral effects requiring the suspension of treatment. The 10 patients who subsequently underwent surgery were in excellent condition and did not require blood transfusions.

A new dentinal bonding agent and microfilled resin system: a 2-year clinical report.

The purpose of this investigation was to study the clinical results obtained with the Gluma dentinal bonding system and Pekalux microfilled composite resin. Sixty esthetic restorations were placed by three different operators. Two years of clinical observation revealed good results. Alpha scores were given to 50 restorations for marginal integrity, 52 for color stability, and 54 for anatomic form. Bravo scores were given to eight restorations for marginal integrity, six for color stability, and four for anatomic form. Only two restorations had to be replaced.

Evaluation of a chemical etching solution for nickel-chromium-beryllium and chromium-cobalt alloys.

Two chemical etching solutions were capable of providing micromechanical retention in two nickel-chromium-beryllium alloys and in a chromium-cobalt alloy. A resin matrix was used to verify the quality of etching on the metal surfaces. The chemical etching solutions created high microretentive surfaces in nickel-chromium-beryllium alloy but the chromium-cobalt alloy surfaces after etching were less retentive. Improved chemical etching technique should encourage expanded use of the resin-bonded retainers.
