The effect of smoking on the presence of antinuclear antibodies and on the morphology of lymphocytes in aged subjects.

The effect of smoking on the presence of antinuclear antibodies and on the occurrence of mitochondrial changes in lymphocytes was studied in 518 subjects over 45 years of age without overt diseases. Antinuclear antibodies could be demonstrated more frequently in smokers than in non-smokers. Smoking did not influence the age dependent degenerative changes in the mitochondria of the lymphocytes, but giant mitochondria could be seen more frequently in smokers than in non-smokers.

Shunt nephritis with crescent formation.

The case of a 17-year-old girl is reported, who presented shunt nephritis, 8 years after the ventriculo-atrial shunt insertion was made. Renal biopsy showed membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis. The symptoms of uremia mingled with those of chronic septic state. Persistent hypocomplementemia and cryoglobulinemia dominated the picture of the disease. At the beginning of the disease Staphylococcus aureus abunded in the blood culture. In spite of the therapy the general status of the patient declined steadily.

Relationship between immunoglobulin levels and specific antibody titers in the elderly.

A population of 228 healthy elderly subjects was studied for immunoglobulin levels, titers of antibacterial antibodies and the prevalence of auto-antibodies, to determine the possible associations between these humoral parameters and age. Serum levels of IgG and especially IgA and the incidence of auto-antibodies (antinuclear antibody and rheumatoid factor) were increased in aged subjects. Some differences were found between males and females. The levels of IgA and natural antibodies were significantly higher in males: the changes of prevalence of auto-antibodies with age were different in males and females; furthermore the correlation between the level of IgG and that of natural antibodies was significant in males. There was a slight positive relationship between the prevalence of auto-antibodies and the level of natural antibodies.

The situation of clinical gerontology in Europe.

A summary of education in gerontology/geriatrics, hospitals and institutes for the aged and organised courses for the elderly in Europe is presented. The report is based on a questionnaire sent to the members of the Council of the European Clinical Section of the International Association of Gerontology in 1984.

Morphological changes in the sex glands of aged and orchidectomized hamsters.

Authors deals with a comparative study of the microscopical changes, principally of the sex glands, found in old intact and in old orchidectomized hamsters. They could see that in the Sertoli cells of the testis, and in the epithelial cells of the seminal vesicle and coagulating gland of the aged intact hamsters, a few lipofuscin granules were present. After orchidectomy the amount of lipofuscin granules increased, showing that their age related changes can be increased by orchidectomy.

Gender differences in age-related physiological changes and some diseases.

The clinical and laboratory data from a cross-sectional and a longitudinal study of healthy individuals between 50-89 years of age and that of centenarians were compared. The examination showed that in healthy elderly subjects and centenarians most of the clinical laboratory findings were in the normal range. However, age-related changes could be observed in erythrocyte sedimentation rate, in serum albumin level, and in the frequency of rheuma factor. Gender difference could be seen in the HDL-cholesterol level. Age and sex differences were observed in the hematocrit-, and hemoglobin-values, in serum creatinine-, total cholesterol-, serum IgG, IgA, IgM-levels, and in the frequency of the occurrence of antinuclear factor. The examinations demonstrated that lower hemoglobin and hematocrit values, elevated total-cholesterol level, the presence of antinuclear and rheuma factor, and elevated systolic blood pressure were more frequent in females than in males. It could be stated, however, that the mentioned changes did not prevent females from having a longer life span than males.

[Extended family, immediate family and caregiver contacts of 100-year-old patients in Hungary].

In the year 1987, 218 centenarians lived in Hungary. First the main demographic data were reported by the surveyors of the Central Statistics Office. The basis of the experience was gained on a limited population (123 subjects). The physicians' team was organized by the Gerontology Center of the Semmelweis University of Medicine. They carried out the detailed medical and environmental check-up. The medical and environmental experiences of the gerontologists were published (1). In our present paper we would like to show the different familial and other relationships of the oldest people. The 123 centenarians were scattered over the whole country, altogether in 67 larger or smaller settlements. More of them lived with a daughter (42%), with a son (14%), with a grandchild (7%), with other relatives (5%) and 3 persons lived together with their wives. We found that the subjects who lived with relatives had a better chance to live an active and meaningful life. The co-existence of several generations, the multilateral contacts of centenarians have a beneficial effect on the quality of life.
