Adenocarcinoma of the pancreas of childhood: a report of two cases.

The clinical, gross anatomical, light microscopic and ultrastructural features of two cases of adenocarcinoma of the pancreas of childhood are presented and compared with adult carcinoma of the pancreas. Both tumours showed acinar differentiation and zymogen granules were demonstrated by electron microscopy. A limited immunohistochemical study suggests that staining for alpha 1-antitrypsin may provide a marker for acinar differentiation. The histogenesis of this tumour is discussed in relation to the possible origins of islet cells.

Unilateral blepharoptosis with synkinetic movements of the eyelids on horizontal gaze.

A 17-year-old woman with a left congenital ptosis and an alternating esotropia is presented. During horizontal gaze to the right and left, the eyelid of the abducting eye elevated and the eyelid of the adducting eye lowered. There were no synkinetic eyelid movements with contraction of the pterygoid, sternocleidomastoid, or facial muscles. Synkinetic eyelid movements due to aberrant regeneration were unlikely due to absence of previous third nerve palsy. A supranuclear innervational abnormality is proposed to explain the clinical findings.

Ectopic pancreas. A cause of false-positive peritoneal cytology.

A patient with a history of ovarian adenocarcinoma underwent further surgery because malignant cells were reported in peritoneal washings on two separate occasions. Subsequent laparotomy revealed an ectopic pancreas on the jejunum. Review of the peritoneal cytologies confirmed that the cells previously thought to be malignant were in fact consistent with cells detached from the ectopic pancreas.

Analysis of pharmaceutical dosage forms for oxfendazole: II. Simultaneous liquid chromatographic determination of oxfendazole and trichlorfon in equine paste.

A reverse phase liquid chromatographic procedure is described for the simultaneous determination of oxfendazole [2-(methoxycarbonylamino)-5-phenylsulfinylbenzimidazole] and trichlorfon [(2,2,2-trichloro-1-hydroxyethyl)phosphonic acid dimethyl ester] in equine paste. The sample is extracted by sonication in methanol. Insoluble excipients are removed by centrifugation and an aliquot plus internal standard are diluted with dilution solvent (water-acetonitrile-phosphoric acid, 80 + 20 + 1). The samples are filtered and injected onto a Partisil-5 ODS-3 column with acetonitrile-0.01 M phosphate buffer pH 6.0 (20 + 80) as mobile phase. Method specificity is confirmed using an absorbance rationing technique. The method yields mean recoveries of 100.9 and 100.0% for trichlorfon and oxfendazole, respectively. Dependence of chromatographic performance characteristics on mobile phase organic content, pH, and buffer concentration is also reported.

Silicone lymphadenopathy: a report of two cases, one with concomitant malignant lymphoma.

Two cases of axillary lymphadenopathy induced by foreign body reaction to silicone particles are presented. Both were patients with longstanding arthritis who had silastic metacarpophalangeal joint implants; one patient also had concomitant lymphoma. The material was conclusively identified as silicone by electron microprobe analysis. With currently increasing numbers of silastic finger joint arthroplasties performed for rheumatoid arthritis, silicone lymphadenopathy should be considered in the differential diagnosis of axillary node enlargement in these patients. A history of previous silastic arthroplasty may not always be made available to the pathologist but the histological appearances are sufficiently characteristic, in our opinion, to warrant this history being sought.

Type D SRV-2 virus-specific CD8+ and CD4- CD8- T cells that regulate virus-induced T cell proliferation in Celebes macaques.

These studies defined SRV-2 envelope peptides 96-102, 127-152, and 233-249 as T cell epitopes that induce significant T cell proliferation. Peripheral blood lymphocytes of Celebes macaques (Macaca nigra) exposed to SRV-2 and currently virus- antibody+, cultured with SRV-2 virus show strongly suppressed T cell responses and have two immunoregulatory T cell populations.
