Temporal arteritis: a form of systemic panarteritis.

The case is reported of a patient with giant cell arteritis affecting several organs. The triggering cause of death was a brainstem infarction due to basilar artery thrombosis. The necropsy showed the systemic character of the disease affecting the coronary, bronchial, and ovarian arteries.

Aged

[AIDS: clinical and necropsy correlation. Analysis of 45 patients].

We have reviewed the autopsies performed on 45 AIDS patients who died in our hospital until June 1989, comparing the post-mortem diagnosis with those made while the patient was alive and in his last hospital admission. Bacterial pneumonia, CMV infection and atypical mycobacteria were the diseases most frequently unnoticed. On the contrary, HIV encephalitis and pulmonary mycosis were the disease with the greatest number of non confirmed clinical diagnosis. The routine performance of necropsy studies to AIDS patients permits to know the most prevalent infections in our environment and should improve the diagnostic precision.

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome

[Purulent meningitis. Presentation of 47 cases].

We report 47 patients with purulent meningitis who were seen at our institution during the last 3 years. In 42.5% of patients an upper respiratory infection previous to the onset of the clinical features of meningitis was demonstrated. We had positive bacteriological results in 47% of cases. In the remaining patients the culture was negative. 56% of these had received previous antibiotic therapy. Only 4 patients died, all of them with initial septic shock. The therapy of choice was i.v. ampicillin, at a dose of 1-3 g/4 hours.
