[A study of the safety of probiotic bacilli].

The aim of the study was to evaluate the biological safety of a range of probiotic bacilli, ingredients of the commercial preparations biosporin, bactisubtil, and irilis; their biological effects were scrutinized in an animal experiment. The study demonstrated that the strains B. subtilis 3, 07, and B. licheniformis 31, 09, ingredients of biosporin and irilis, unlike B. cereus IP 5832, an ingredient of bactisubtil, were not toxic, toxigenic, or virulent, and did not impair the antitoxic hepatic function, which allows considering them to be safe.

[Pre-clinical trials of new spore probiotics].

The paper presents the results of a pre-clinical trial of Bacillus bacterial strains that are ingredients of biosporin, bisporin, and irilis, new Russian probiotic preparations. The study included determination of the cultural and biochemical properties of the probiotic strains, their antagonistic activity, adhesion ability, resistance to various biological liquids, and the length of their persistence in mouse alimentary tract. The listed properties were compared with those of foreign commercial preparations, bactisubtil and enterogermin. The study demonstrated high antagonistic activity of biosporin, bisporin, and irilis against many bacteria of different taxonomic groups, and Candidae. Besides this, the study showed that, unlike similar foreign preparations, the Russian ones were characterized by relatively low adhesive ability, short-term persistence, and absence of virulence factors. According to the results of the study, the most prospective probiotic strains for further clinical application are B. subtilis VKPM B-8611 and B. licheniformis VKPM B-8610, an irilis ingredient.

Modern methods for diagnosis of Gardnerella infection.

Comparison of morphological, bacteriological, serological, and genetic methods for diagnosis of Gardnerella infection in vaginosis showed that the first three methods are preferable, while the genetic method (polymerase chain reaction) is more efficient for identification of Gardnerella vaginalis in culture.

[The effect of a plague pathogen plasmid on lethality and immunogenicity].

On the model of Yersinia transconjugants (Yersinia pestis, Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, Yersinia enterocolitica) carrying the conjugative cointegrates containing the 47 and 65 Md plasmids from Yersinia pestis the data were obtained on the different affects of the latter plasmids on the lethality and immunogenicity conferred by the host bacterial cells. The plasmid effects were drastically different during bacterial infection in mice or guinea pigs. The possibility of appearance of the recombinant Yersinia in natural epizootic foci of plague and suggestions on their regulating role are discussed.

[Interaction of ATPase from submitochondrial fragments and a natural inhibitor protein during delta-mu-H+ generation on a membrane].

An addition of the inhibitor protein (IF1) to submitochondrial particles (SMP) essentially free of endogenous IF1 (AS-SMP) results in a synchroneous inhibition of ATP hydrolysis and ATP-dependent reduction of NAD+ by succinate without any effect on the oxidative phosphorylation rate. The binding of IF1 to the membrane-bound ATPase leads to the loss of the inhibitor protein sensitivity to trypsin despite the delta mu H+ generation. The data obtained are consistent with a model according to which there exist the hydrolase and synthetase forms of F1 and contradict the generally accepted concepts on the delta mu H+-dependent dissociation of the F1-IF1 complex.

[Spore probiotics].

Data on probiotic preparations prepared from spore-forming bacteria is reviewed. Information on indications for use, effectiveness and the mechanism of action is given. Preparations being produced in Russia (Biosporin, Sporobacterin and Bactosporin) are evaluated in detail as well as the prospects of the application of probiotics from spore-forming bacteria.

[Alkaline and acid phosphatase activity in the dynamics of ectopic osteogenesis].

Activities of marker enzymes of osteoblasts (alkaline phosphatase), osteoclasts (tartrate-resistant isoform of acid phosphatase), and macrophages (tartrate-sensitive isoform of acid phosphatase) in bone tissue forming after osteoinduction on the basis of demineralized bone matrix were under study. Early (1 week) stages of osteosynthesis were characterized by low activity of alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase being represented by the tartrate-sensitive isoform. Two-three weeks later alkaline phosphatase activity grew and the tartrate-resistant isoform of acid phosphatase appeared. By the fourth-sixth weeks of osteogenesis alkaline phosphatase activity stabilized at a certain level and acid phosphatase activity still grew at the expense of the tartrate-resistant isoform. Conformity of the enzymologic data to changes in cellular populations in ectopic osteogenesis is discussed.
