Identification and management of cognitive and perceptual deficits in the rehabilitation patient.
The rehabilitation nurse frequently encounters patients who display cognitive/perceptual impairments as a result of a head injury or cerebrovascular accident. Deficits in attention, perception, memory, sequencing, and initiation may prevent the patient from reaching goals set by nurses or other rehabilitation professionals. When nurses recognize cognitive or perceptual impairments and have techniques available that will compensate for such deficits, they can more readily help patients meet rehabilitation goals.

Effects of reminiscence on life satisfaction of elderly female nursing home residents.
The author investigated the efficacy of a reminiscence group in increasing life satisfaction in elderly female nursing home residents. E. Erikson's (1982) developmental theory and R.N. Butler's (1981) theory of reminiscing provided the theoretical framework for the study. It was hypothesized that reminiscing would increase life satisfaction when measured by the Life Satisfaction Index A (Neugarten et al., 1961). The design was experimental, using pretest and posttest data collection. Thirty-six female nursing home residents over 65 years of age were randomly assigned to a reminiscing group or a control group. A statistically significant difference (p = .03) was found between the reminiscing group and the control group on the dependent variable, life satisfaction, when data were analyzed using an analysis of covariance. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Measuring public attitudes on abortion: methodological and substantive considerations.
Data from a 1989 CBS News/New York Times survey are used to examine the effect that the framing of questions on abortion has on estimates of what proportions of the population support various legal positions. The nationwide data and results from six state polls show that general questions with only two or three options overestimate the proportions of respondents who either favor a ban on all abortion or who would allow abortion under all circumstances. Questions that pose specific circumstances result in movement of respondents out of extreme categories and into more moderate ones. Even respondents who indicate they would favor abortion in all specific circumstances and those who favor abortion in none are likely to moderate their views when asked if they support restrictions that have been proposed in a number of states.
