Neurocranial morphology in mandibulofacial dysostosis (Treacher Collins syndrome).

An abnormal cranial base could exert a negative influence on neurocranial development. Because patients with mandibulofacial dysostosis (MFD) present an abnormal cranial base (basilar kyphosis), a retrospective mixed longitudinal cephalometric study was designed with the purpose of ascertaining the presence of abnormalities of neurocranial form and size in this population of patients. The lateral and frontal cephalometric radiographs from 33 patients with MFD (15 males, 18 females) ranging in age from 3 years 4 months to 19 years 6 months were used. For comparison cephalometric radiographs from two samples were obtained: one from 24 children (12 male, 12 female) with repaired cleft lip only, and the other from 41 normal young adults (21 male, 21 female). All films were traced, and 9 linear, 1 angular, and 3 derived measurements were obtained from the neurocranium and cranial base. Differences between groups according to age and sex were tested with Student's t-test at the 5% level of significance. A correlation analysis between the cranial base angle and selected neurocranial variables was also conducted. The results showed that although the neurocranium in MFD had normal dimensions in length, height, and volume, it had an abnormal shape. The neurocranium had reduced length anteriorly and increased length posteriorly. The upper cranial height was decreased and the lower cranial height was increased. The difference in shape was evident during childhood and remained in adulthood. The dimensions of the anterior and posterior cranial base, as well as the cranial base angle, were smaller in MFD. A significant negative correlation was found between the cranial base angle and the lower cranial height in MFD.

Timing and character of reciprocal temporomandibular joint sounds in an asymptomatic orthodontic sample.

The timing and character of opening and closing temporomandibular joint sounds were evaluated in a sample of 33 asymptomatic subjects with reciprocal clicking. Using stereophonic headphones and videotape recordings, three consecutive reciprocal sounds were recorded and analyzed. The timing of the three consecutive opening and closing sounds was consistent in the majority of subjects, and occurred generally on late opening and middle to late closing. When the timing, character (frequency, amplitude, and duration), and wave patterns were evaluated, a notable amount of variation was observed in the overall sample. This suggested a variety of intra-articular reasons for the reciprocal sounds in this particular sample of subjects.

Deciduous tooth dimensions in cleft lip and palate.

The deciduous teeth of 40 subjects with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (CUCLP) and 42 noncleft controls were measured. The mesiodistal and faciolingual dimensions of several maxillary teeth in the vicinity of the cleft were smaller than their corresponding antimeres. No such differences were apparent in the mandibular arch. In the control sample there were no differences in either maxillary or mandibular arches. The CUCLP group generally demonstrated significantly smaller dimensions for both mesiodistal and faciolingual dimensions for both maxillary and mandibular arches when compared to the control group. These findings lend possible support to the hypothesis that tissue deficiency may be a factor in cleft lip and palate development.

Muscle sarcomere length following passive jaw opening in the rabbit.

Sarcomere lengths were measured microscopically in formalin-fixed jaw muscles of 14 rabbits divided into two groups; jaw open, and jaw closed. The measurements were compared by means of a nested analysis of variance. The sarcomeres of the jaw open group were longer in the masseter and temporalis muscles (jaw elevators) and shorter in the digastric muscle (jaw depressor) than were those of the jaw closed group. In the jaw closed position, sarcomeres in the deep portion of the masseter muscle become markedly shorter than those in the superficial part of the muscle. The values for sarcomere length in the masseter muscle of the jaw open group and the digastric of the jaw closed group are near the top of the ascending limb of isometric length-tension relation for the rabbit digastric muscle.

A computer program for the analysis of dental arch form using the cubic spline function.

This paper presents the details and logic of a FORTRAN computer program which fits a cubic interpolatory spline to a set of data points digitized from an exact size photographic reproduction of a dental model. It also measures the length of the arc and computes a set of normals to the curve to be used in evaluating the error in the fit of the spline. The program is used in studies of dental arch form and is useful in evaluating changes in the form of the arches due to orthodontic treatment. The measurement of the arc length provides an adequate assessment of space available in the dental arch, which is of importance to the orthodontist.

A computer program for the analysis of dental models.

This paper presents the details and logic of a Fortran computer program which carries out routine clinical analysis of dental models resulting from impressions of the teeth and related structures, which are subsequently cast in plaster of Paris. The program is primarily intended for use by the orthodontist who is engaged in research or clinical practice, and is useful in studies related to changes in the dentition as a result of orthodontic treatment.
