Synthesis and X-ray Powder Structure of a New Pillared Layered Cadmium Phosphonate, Giving Evidence that the Intercalation of Alkylamines into Cd(O(3)PR).H(2)O Is Topotactic.

A new pillared layered phosphonate, cadmium 2-aminoethylphosphonate, Cd(O(3)PC(2)H(4)NH(2)) (1), has been synthesized, and its structure was solved ab initio from X-ray powder diffraction data and refined by Rietveld methods. Compound 1 is orthorhombic: space group Pna2(1), a = 15.4643(2) Å, b = 5.16512(7) Å, c = 6.27650(8) Å, and Z = 4. Its layer arrangement is similar to that in Cd(O(3)PR).H(2)O, except that the water molecule coordinated to cadmium in Cd(O(3)PR).H(2)O is replaced by the nitrogen atom from the amino ends of the ethyl chains borne by phosphorus of the upper and lower layers. The strong similarity of the IR, (31)P, and (113)Cd NMR data for Cd(O(3)PC(2)H(4)NH(2)) and Cd(O(3)PCH(3)).n-NH(2)C(4)H(9) clearly shows the topotactic character of the intercalation of n-alkylamines in the dehydrated form of Cd(O(3)PR).H(2)O to yield Cd(O(3)PR).n-NH(2)R'.

71Ga Chemical Shielding and Quadrupole Coupling Tensors of the Garnet Y(3)Ga(5)O(12) from Single-Crystal (71)Ga NMR.

A single-crystal (71)Ga NMR study of the garnet Y(3)Ga(5)O(12) (YGG) has resulted in the determination of the first chemical shielding tensors reported for the (71)Ga quadrupole. The single-crystal spectra are analyzed in terms of the combined effect of quadrupole coupling and chemical shielding anisotropy (CSA). (71)Ga quadrupole coupling and CSA parameters for the two (tetrahedrally and octahedrally coordinated) gallium sites with axial symmetry in YGG (Ga(IV), C(Q) = 13.1 +/- 0.2 MHz and delta(sigma) = 54 +/- 50 ppm; Ga(VI), C(Q) = 4.10 +/- 0.06 MHz and delta(sigma) = 24 +/- 3 ppm) are fully consistent with its cubic crystal structure which supports the reliability of the experimental data. In addition, the (71)Ga and (27)Al isotropic chemical shifts for YGG and YAG give further support to the linear correlation observed earlier between (71)Ga and (27)Al isotropic chemical shifts.

NMR Characterization of the Na(3)AlP(3)O(9)N and Na(2)Mg(2)P(3)O(9)N Nitridophosphates: Location of the (NaAl)/Mg(2) Substitution.

We report a solid state nuclear magnetic resonance study of (23)Na, (27)Al, and (31)P in two crystalline nitridophosphate phases, Na(3)AlP(3)O(9)N and Na(2)Mg(2)P(3)O(9)N, including two-dimensional multiple-quantum magic angle spinning (MQ-MAS) experiments on (23)Na to separate overlapping lines. The previously described single-crystal structure of Na(3)AlP(3)O(9)N gives crystallographic examples of Al(OP)(6) and P(O[Al,Na])(2)(ONa)(N[P,Na]) environments and three different environments of sodium: two Na(O)(6) and one Na(O)(6)(N). From these observations we characterize the modification of the local environment of phosphorus and show that Mg only substitutes Na in the Na2 site of the Na(2)Mg(2)P(3)O(9)N structure.
