Solid-state laser pumping by light guides.

What we believe to be novel pumping schemes for lamp-pumped solid-state lasers are proposed. Based on the refractive and total internal reflection principles, curved fused-silica light guides of rectangular cross sections are used to couple the pump radiation from an arc lamp into a laser crystal. The performances of light-guide pumping schemes are analyzed through a nonsequential ray-trace program and are compared to that of a single elliptical cavity. Improved pump radiation distribution around the laser crystal was registered. The light-guide cavities also permit tailoring the pump flux distribution within the active medium. A lamp-pumped Nd:YAG laser by a light-guide cavity was built and tested. An overall laser efficiency of 1.1% was measured.

Aerobic degradation of diethyl phthalate by Sphingomonas sp.

An aerobic diethyl phthalate (DEP) degrading bacterium, DEP-AD1, was isolated from activated sludge. Based on its 16S rDNA sequence, this isolate was identified belonging to Sphingomonas genus with 99% similarity to Sphingomonas sp. strain C28242 and 98% similarity to S. capsulate. The specific degradation rate of DEP was concentration dependent with a maximum of 14 mg-DEP/(Lh). Results of degradation tests showed that DEP-AD1 could also degrade monoethyl phthalate (MEP), dimethyl phthalate (DMP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), but not phthalate and benzoate.

Nitrogen removal via nitrite from seawater contained sewage.

Under the control of both pH and the concentration of free ammonia (FA), the nitrification-denitrification via nitrite pathway was accomplished in SBR to achieve enhanced biological nitrogen removal from seawater contained wastewater, which is used to flush toilet, under relatively high salinity. Several parameters including salinity, temperature, pH, and NH4+-N loading rate were studied to evaluate their effects. The results indicate that at different salinity the nitrogen removal efficiency is relative to ammonia-nitrogen loading rate. The nitrogen removal efficiency reaches above 90% when the NH4+-N loading does not exceed 0.15 kg NH4+-N/kg MLSS d. With the salinity increasing, the ammonia-nitrogen loading rate should be lowered to obtain high removal efficiency. The evaluation of temperature effect shows that nitrogen removal efficiency is promoted twice when reaction temperature is elevated from 20 to 30 degrees C. Moderately high pH in the range of 7.5-8.5 has advantage to achieve effective nitrification-denitrification via nitrite, the process of which is caused by the selective inhibition of free ammonia (FA).
