0.18-microm complementary metal-oxide semiconductor push-pull vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser driver operating at 2.5 Gb/s with symmetric rising and falling edges.

A vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) driver design that utilizes a novel push-pull circuit topology is described. The VCSEL driver design can provide both a current pushing and a current pulling mechanism and therefore is capable of producing symmetric rise and fall times. The design was implemented in a 0.18-microm foundry n-well complementary metal-oxide semiconductor technology and operates at data rates up to 2.5 Gb/s with a power consumption of 45 mW at an average optical output power of 1 mW.

Experimental techniques using optically enabled ring oscillators.

We present a method for characterizing transceiver performance in parallel optical data links. By establishing a bidirectional link between two optically enabled chips, the conditions for a ring oscillator are made possible. We propose this technique as a means of measuring the sensitivity of transceiver latency to controlled variables such as temperature, optical output power, supply voltage, and device misalignment. This method is noninvasive and independent of the packaging, circuit topology, and optical medium used. The technique is demonstrated experimentally, and results are compared with a simulation.

Design and implementation of a modulator-based free-space optical backplane for multiprocessor applications.

Design and implementation of a free-space optical backplane for multiprocessor applications is presented. The system is designed to interconnect four multiprocessor nodes that communicate by using multiplexed 32-bit packets. Each multiprocessor node is electrically connected to an optoelectronic VLSI chip which implements the hyperplane interconnection architecture. The chips each contain 256 optical transmitters (implemented as dual-rail multiple quantum-well modulators) and 256 optical receivers. A rigid free-space microoptical interconnection system that interconnects the transceiver chips in a 512-channel unidirectional ring is implemented. Full design, implementation, and operational details are provided.

512-channel vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser based free-space optical link.

A vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser based bidirectional free-space optical interconnect has been implemented to interconnect two printed circuit boards. A total of 512 clustered channels with a density of 2844 channels/cm2 are transmitted over a distance of 83 mm. The optical interconnect is a combination of refractive microlenses and diffractive minilens relays.

Implementation of a compact, four-stage, scalable optical interconnect for photonic backplane applications.

We report on the implementation of a dense 512-beam free-space optical interconnect linking four optoelectronic VLSI chips at the backplane level. The system presented maximizes the positioning tolerances of the components by use of slow f-number (f/16) Gaussian beams and oversized apertures. A beam-clustering scheme whereby a 4 x 4 array of beams is transmitted by each minilens is used to provide a high channel density. A modular approach is used to decrease the number of degrees of freedom in the system and achieve passive alignment of the modules in the final integration phase. A design overview as well as assembly and experimental results are presented.
