Convergent and discriminant validity of the Arabic Obsessive-Compulsive Scale for Kuwaiti and American college students.

In two samples of 87 Kuwaiti and 73 American undergraduates, scores on the Arabic Obsessive-Compulsive Scale correlated .71 and .63 with those on another obsession scale, respectively, while they correlated .49 and .19 with scores on a depression scale. The differences between these correlations in the two samples indicated good convergent and discriminant validity of the Arabic Obsessive-Compulsive Scale in both cultures.

Mortality from abortion after Roe vs Wade.

The decline in mortality from abortions after Roe vs Wade was probably a result of the introduction of safer procedures for abortions, but the decline in mortality was greater for induced abortions than for other types of abortions.

Self-destructive behaviors in American Indian and Alaska Native high school youth.

Analysis of responses of 10,251 high school students surveyed in the 1997 National School-Based Youth Risk Survey indicated that American Indian and Alaska Native youths engaged more often in risky behaviors than White or Black youths. The pattern of involvement in risky behavior was different for youths from the three ethnic groups.

Suicide on death row.

The suicide rate on death row for the period 1976 through 1999 was found to be high (113 per 100,000 per year), some five times higher than the suicide rate for the male population of the United States. The death row suicide rate was predicted by features of the death row population (negatively with the population on death row) and by social indicators of the society as a whole (negatively with birth and divorce rates and positively with marriage rates).

Subcellular interactions between parallel fibre and climbing fibre signals in Purkinje cells predict sensitivity of classical conditioning to interstimulus interval.

Classical conditioning of the nictitating membrane response requires a specific temporal interval between conditioned stimulus and unconditioned stimulus, and produces an increase in Protein Kinase C (PKC) activation in Purkinje cells. To evaluate whether biochemical interactions within the Purkinje cell may explain the temporal sensitivity, a model of PKC activation by Ca2+, diacylglycerol (DAG), and arachidonic acid (AA) is developed. Ca2+ elevation is due to CF stimulation and IP3 induced Ca2+ release (IICR). DAG and IP3 result from PF stimulation, while AA results from phospholipase A2 (PLA2). Simulations predict increased PKC activation when PF stimulation precedes CF stimulation by 0.1 to 3 s. The sensitivity of IICR to the temporal relation between PF and CF stimulation, together with the buffering system of Purkinje cells, significantly contribute to the temporal sensitivity.

Music preferences and suicidality: a comment on Stack.

In a study of 78 undergraduates, 2 factors of music preferences were identified--(a) heavy metal and rock and (b) rap versus country. Music preferences contributed to the prediction of suicidal ideation only in the male students.
