Factors that influence aggregation of lanthanide(III) (Ln(III)) ions to form polynuclear complexes were studied utilizing 1-aziridineethanol as a versatile source of macrocyclic and acyclic chelates. The facile ring-opening cyclo-oligomerization of 1-aziridineethanol leads to the formation of a series of polyaza cyclic oligomers (series A). In the presence of ethylenediamine, a competing N-alkylation reaction occurs to produce a new class of acyclic ligands (series B). The cyclo-oligomerization of four 1-aziridineethanol units is the most favorable process, leading to the formation of the 12-membered cyclen-type macrocycle, H(4)L(1) (1,4,7,10-tetrakis(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraaza-cyclododecane). Ring-opening cyclo-oligomerization of 1-aziridineethanol in the presence of Ln(III) ions produces self-assembled mononuclear, tetranuclear, and pentanuclear compounds of H(4)L(1). In the presence of ethylenediamine, oligomerization of 1-aziridineethanol results in a dinuclear complex of an acyclic poly(amino-alkoxide) H(2)L(2). The coordinative unsaturation of (i) the alkoxy sites of [H(x)L(1)](x)(-)(4) (where x < 4) and (ii) Ln(III) ions in coordination numbers less than nine are critical factors in the formation of the polynuclear Ln(III) complexes. The identities of mononuclear, dinuclear, tetranuclear, and pentanuclear complexes herein discussed were established by X-ray crystallography.
Iron(II) complexes bearing monoanionic tridentate salicyladiminato ligands are shown to be highly efficient catalysts for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Polymerization rates for styrene are among the highest reported for iron-mediated ATRP in nonpolar media, correlating well with E1/2 potentials and DeltaEp values for the complexes. The rigidity of the tridentate ligands, combined with ample space around the metal center to accommodate a halogen atom, we believe to be an important factor in the efficient ATRP behavior of these systems.
Three classes of ligands, designed to explore the effect of variations on the central pyridine donor core in bis(imino)pyridine iron and cobalt ethylene polymerization catalysts of the general formula [LMCl(2)] (M = Fe or Co), have been prepared. The first class comprises six-membered N-heterocycles (pyrimidine and triazine) and the second class five-membered heterocycles (furan and thiophene) as the central donor core. In the third class of ligands, the imine donor arm has been extended by one carbon to give anionic tridentate ligands based on carbazole and neutral analogues based on dibenzofuran and dibenzothiophene. The coordination behavior of these ligands upon reaction with FeCl(2) or CoCl(2) has been investigated, whereby only in the case of the neutral pyrimidine or the anionic carbazolide unit as the central donor core have stable complexes been obtained. Ethylene polymerization results are compared with the parent bis(imino)pyridine iron and cobalt catalyst systems.
Certain molecular switches respond to input stimulations producing detectable outputs. The interplay of these signals can be exploited to reproduce basic logic operations at the molecular level. The transition from simple logic gates to complex digital circuits requires the design of chemical systems able to process multiple inputs and outputs. We have identified a three-state molecular switch that responds to one chemical and two optical inputs producing two optical outputs. We have encoded binary digits in its inputs and outputs applying positive logic conventions and demonstrated that this chemical system converts three-digit input strings into two-digit output strings. The logic function executed by the three-state molecular switch is equivalent to that of a combinational logic circuit integrating two AND, two NOT, and one OR gate. The three states of the molecular switch are a colorless spiropyran, a purple trans-merocyanine, and its yellow-green protonated form. We have elucidated their structures by X-ray crystallography, (1)H NMR spectroscopy, COSY and NOE experiments, as well as density functional calculations. The three input stimulations controlling the interconversion of the three states of the molecular switch are ultraviolet light, visible light, and H(+). The two outputs are the absorption bands in the visible region of the two colored states of the molecular switch. We have monitored the switching processes and quantified the associated thermodynamic and kinetic parameters with the aid of (1)H NMR and visible absorption spectroscopies.

The novel five- and seven-membered ring appended aminoporphyrazines 3 and 12 have been prepared via mixed Linstead macrocyclization. The structures of both have been unequivocally established by X-ray crystallographic studies. Reductive deselenation of selenadiazole 3 in the presence of 9,10-phenanthrenequinone or 2,3-butanedione results in the formation of pyrazines 6a,b, whereas oxidation of porphyrazine 12 gave the corresponding seco derivative 14. seco-Porphyrazine 14 mediates the generation of singlet oxygen with a quantum yield of 0.74.
Cadmium is a non-essential element that has high rates of soil to plant transference compared with other non-essential elements, and certain plant species accumulate large amounts of cadmium from low cadmium content soils. In this paper, levels of cadmium found in major food groups are highlighted together with cadmium levels found in liver and kidney samples from non-occupationally exposed populations. Data on human kidney cadmium levels identified recently, including the study in our own laboratory, are compared with older studies. Human-tissue cadmium contents showed large variations among individuals, but sources of the variation remain unknown. Exposure levels of 30-50 microg per day have been estimated for adults and these levels have been linked to increased risk of bone fracture, cancer, kidney dysfunction and hypertension. Increased mortality was found among individuals showing signs of cadmium renal toxicity compared with those without such signs, suggesting that renal toxicity may be an early warning of complications, sub-clinical or clinical morbidity.
This paper investigates the possible link between non-workplace cadmium (Cd) exposure, cytochrome P450 expression and hypertension. We present results of our investigation into the relationships between liver and kidney Cd burdens and the abundance of the CYP isoform 4A11. Our data show associations between non-workplace Cd exposure and changes in the abundance of hepatic and renal cortical CYP4A11. In liver the levels of immunochemically detectable CYP4A11 were positively correlated with tissue Cd content while in contrast CYP4A11 abundance was inversely correlated with kidney Cd burden. These differences are most likely related to the different Cd burden of the tissues. These observations suggest the potential for involvement of Cd as a mediator of CYP4A11 expression in kidney cortex and indicate that elevations in kidney Cd content may be involved in hypertension via alteration of the expression of this particular isoform. Potential mechanisms by which Cd may alter CYP4A11 expression are discussed briefly.
The template-directed syntheses, employing bisparaphenylene-[34]crown-10 (BPP34C10), 1,5-dinaphthoparaphenylene-[36]crown-10 (1/5NPPP36C10), and 1,5-dinaphtho-[38]crown-10 (1/5DNP38C10) as templates, of three [2]catenanes, whereby one of the two bipyridinium units in cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) is replaced by a bipicolinium unit, are described. The crude reaction mixtures comprising the [2]catenanes all contain slightly more of the homologous [3]catenanes, wherein a "dimeric" octacationic cyclophane has the crown ether macrocycles encircling the alternating bipyridinium units with the bipicolinium units completely unfettered. X-ray crystallography, performed on all three [2]catenanes and two of the three [3]catenanes reveals co-conformational and stereochemical preferences that are stark and pronounced. Both the [3]catenanes crystallize as mixtures of diastereoisomers on account of the axial chirality associated with the picolinium units in the solid state. Dynamic (1)H NMR spectroscopy is employed to probe in solution the relative energy barriers for rotations by the phenylene and pyridinium rings in the tetracationic cyclophane component of the [2]catenanes. Where there are co-conformational changes that are stereochemically "allowed", crown ether circumrotation and rocking processes are also investigated for the relative rates of their occurrence. The outcome is one whereby the three [2]catenanes containing BPP34C10, 1/5NPPP36C10, and 1/5DNP38C10 exist as one major enantiomeric pair of diastereoisomers amongst two, four, and eight diastereoisomeric pairs of enantiomers, respectively. The diastereoisomerism is a consequence of the presence of axial chirality together with helical and/or planar chirality in the same interlocked molecule. These [2]catenanes constitute a rich reserve of new stereochemical types that might be tapped for their switching and mechanical properties.
A cyclic dimeric daisy chain compound, which has been assembled from a disfunctional [2]rotaxane in a sequence of noncovalent and covalent synthetic steps, the most important of which is a bis-Wittig reaction, has been characterised by X-ray crystallography.
The concept of using [2]rotaxanes that carry one or more surrogate stoppers which can subsequently be converted chemically into other structural units, resulting in the formation of new interlocked molecular compounds, is introduced and exemplified. Starting from simple NH2(+)-centered/crown-ether-based [2]rotaxanes, containing either one or two benzylic triphenylphosphonium stoppers, the well-known Wittig reaction has been employed to make, 1) other [2]rotaxanes, 2) higher order rotaxanes, 3) branched rotaxanes, and 4) molecular shuttles--all isolated as pure compounds, following catalytic hydrogenations of their carbon-carbon double bonds, obtained when aromatic aldehydes react with the ylides produced when the benzylic triphenylphosphonium derivatives are treated with strong base. The two starting [2]rotaxanes were characterized fully in solution and also in the solid state by X-ray crystallography. The new interlocked molecular compounds that result from carrying out post-assembly Wittig reactions on two [2]rotaxanes were characterized by (dynamic) 1H NMR spectroscopy. In the case of a molecular shuttle in which the crown ether component is dibenzo[24]-crown-8 (DB24C8), shuttling is slow on the 1H NMR timescale, even at high temperatures. However, when DB24C8 is replaced by benzometaphenylene[25]-crown-8 as the ring component in the molecular shuttle, the frequency of the shuttling is observed to be around 100 Hz in [D4]methanol at 63 degrees C.
Macrocyclic receptors having extreme thermo-oxidative stability, and which bind a wide range of electron-donor substrates via pi-stacking donor-acceptor interactions, are accessible by cycloimidization of an amine-functionalized aryl ether-sulfone with pyromellitic dianhydride or 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride. The potential of these receptors in supramolecular chemistry is illustrated, for example, by the spontaneous self-assembly and crystallization of a five-component [3]pseudorotaxane from a solution of its constituents.
Synthesis and single-crystal X-ray structures of mixed triple and double calixarenes 6 and 7, obtained from the base-catalyzed condensation of calix[5]arene 1 with cone pertosylated calix[4]arene 2, are reported. VT-NMR studies on 7 are consistent with a molecular motion arising from the anti-gauche conformational interconversion of its ethylene linkages.
Four-coordinate iron(II) complexes bearing alpha-diimine ligands with alkyl substituents are shown to be efficient catalysts for the well-controlled atom transfer radical polymerisation of styrene; catalysts containing aryldiimine ligands support competitive beta-hydrogen chain transfer processes.
[reaction: see text] The meso-decamethyl-calix[5]pyrrole 2b was synthesized from the furan-based analogue 1b via the homologation of the furan rings to pyrrole, and its solid-state structure was determined by X-ray crystallography: surprisingly, the binding constant of 2b toward chloride is found to be lower than that of the tetrameric analogue 2a.
Calix[6]pyrrole 2 and the "hybrid systems" calix[3]furan[3]pyrrole 12, calix[2]furan[4]pyrrole 13, and calix[1]furan[5]pyrrole 14, have been synthesized by increasing conversion of the furan units present in the readily accessible calix[6]furan 3 to pyrroles. The host-guest chemistry of these novel macrocycles towards a number of anions, including halogen ions, dihydrogen phosphate, hydrogen sulfate, nitrate, and cyanide has been investigated in solution by (1)H NMR titration techniques and/or phase transfer experiments. The solid-state structures of the free receptors 2, 12, and 13, the 1:1 complexes of calix[6]pyrrole 2 with chloride and bromide, and the 1:1 complex of 14 with chloride are also reported.
Reaction of [Nb(NMe(2))(5)] with 10 equiv of 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3)SH in toluene results in the formation of red crystals of [Nb(SC(6)H(3)Me(2)-2,6)(5)]. Crystal structure analysis of [Nb(SC(6)H(3)Me(2)-2,6)(5)] showed that the niobium center adopts a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry. Niobium disulfide, NbS(2), has been successfully prepared via a thio "sol-gel" process using [Nb(SC(6)H(3)Me(2)-2,6)(5)] as the metal source. In contrast, vapor phase thin-film studies revealed that [Nb(SC(6)H(3)Me(2)-2,6)(5)] functions as a single-source precursor to NbS films.
