A role for antigen in the maintenance of immunological memory.

The immune system has a memory that it exhibits in the enhanced and augmented responses the second time it meets an antigen. The memory is the result of a number of changes to the system brought about during the primary response. The most important of these changes is the formation of an expanded pool of antigen-specific memory cells. One of the enduring questions in immunology is how these memory cells are maintained for such long periods.

Achieving value for money? Evaluation of two wound dressings.

During the past three decades there has been dramatic increase in spending on wound dressing products in the UK. While the rise in costs in many ways reflects a rise in the performance of the products purchased, it remains vital that nurses charged with prescribing such products achieve value for money. This article describes a small study of the use of a primary dressing and a secondary wound dressing in 12 patients, representing a range of wounds. In each case a more expensive alternative would normally have been used. In each case observed, involving both primary and secondary dressings, no deficit in clinical performance was noted but potential cost benefits were identified. The authors conclude that these initial findings are encouraging and further studies are required to address this important area of wound management.

Best practice statement of the prevention of pressure ulcers.

The Nursing and Midwifery Development Unit, Scotland, has developed a range of best practice statements, one of which relates to the prevention of pressure ulcers. The development of the statement involved achieving a consensus as to what constituted best practice in this field among the 30 nurse specialists in tissue viability working within Scotland. The statement aims to provide practical, relevant and factual information to guide pressure ulcer prevention practice.

Deep Cell Prime: preventing and healing pressure ulcers.

One method of pressure ulcer prevention is the use of alternating pressure air mattresses. This article outlines the Talley Medical Deep Cell Prime trade mark mattress replacement system, which is used in conjunction with Trinity HR Dynamic trade mark cushion in order to provide 24-hour pressure relief.

Part 1. Pressure ulcer prevention. Best practice statements.

Although pressure ulcer prevention is an important issue in all areas of health care, a lack of randomised controlled trials has led to the development of clinical guidelines that rely on low-grade evidence. The best practice statement on pressure ulcer prevention consists of five sections: education and audit, risk assessment, skin inspection, positioning, and mattresses, chairs and cushions. It was developed using the best available evidence and the expert opinion of 30 tissue viability nurse specialists.
