Propagation of elliptical Gaussian beams modulated by an elliptical annular aperture.

An analytical propagation expression for a generalized astigmatic elliptical Gaussian beam (EGB) modulated by an elliptical annular aperture and passing through an axially nonsymmetrical optical system is obtained by the use of vector integration. The derived analytical results provide more convenience for studying the propagation and transformation of EGBs than the usual method of using the diffraction integral directly, and the efficiency of the numerical calculation is significantly improved. Some numerical simulations are illustrated for the propagation properties of EGBs passing through a free space with an elliptical annular aperture, an elliptical screen, or an elliptical aperture. Further extensions are also pointed out.

Fractional Fourier transform of truncated elliptical Gaussian beams.

Based on the fact that a hard-edged elliptical aperture can be expanded approximately as a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions in tensor form, an analytical expression for an elliptical Gaussian beam (EGB) truncated by an elliptical aperture and passing through a fractional Fourier transform system is derived by use of vector integration. The approximate analytical results provide more convenience for studying the propagation and transformation of truncated EGBs than the usual way by using the integral formula directly, and the efficiency of numerical calculation is significantly improved.

Optical image encryption with Hartley transforms.

We propose a new method for image encryption based on Hartley transforms that is a real transform and can be realized by spatially incoherent or coherent illumination. The proposed optical implementation is based on a Michelson-type interferometer in which the pure random intensity is distributed at the Hartley plane in encryption. Computer simulations prove it is possible. A Hartley hologram method is also given and described to resolve the sign ambiguity problem that would be encountered in image reconstruction.

Propagation of decentered elliptical Gaussian beams in apertured and nonsymmetrical optical systems.

A hard-edged elliptical aperture is described approximately by a tensor form, which can be expanded as a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions. An analytical propagation expression for a decentered elliptical Gaussian beam (DEGB) through an axially nonsymmetrical optical system with an elliptical aperture is derived by using vector integration. The approximate analytical results are compared with numerically integral ones, and it is shown that this method can significantly improve the efficiency of numerical calculation. Some numerical simulations are illustrated for the propagation properties of DEGBs through apertured and nonsymmetrical optical transforming systems.

Controllable elliptical dark-hollow beams.

A new (to our knowledge) kind of light beam called the controllable elliptical dark-hollow beam (CEDHB), is introduced to describe dark-hollow beams with axially rotational asymmetry by using the tensor method. The propagation formulas of CEDHBs through paraxial aligned and misaligned nonsymmetrical optical systems are derived through vector integration. With the derived formulas, the propagation properties of CEDHBs in free-space propagation and through a misaligned thin lens are studied graphically. The CEDHBs provide a convenient model to describe and treat dark-hollow beams with axially rotational asymmetry and can be used conveniently to analyze atoms manipulated with a dark-hollow beam.

Approximate method for the generalized M2 factor of rotationally symmetric hard-edged diffracted flattened Gaussian beams.

On the basis of the truncated second-order moments method in the cylindrical coordinate systems and the expansion of the hard-edged aperture function into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, an approximate method used to calculate the generalized beam propagation factor (M2 factor) is proposed. The approximate analytical expressions of the generalized M2 factor for rotationally symmetric hard-edged diffracted flattened Gaussian beams defined by Gori [Opt. Commun. 107, 335 (1994)] and Li [Opt. Lett. 27, 1007 (2002)] are derived, respectively; we show that it depends on the beam order N and the beam truncation parameter delta. Some typical numerical examples are given to illustrate its applications that we compare by using the obtained analytical method and the numerical integration method.

Different models for a hard-aperture function and corresponding approximate analytical propagation equations of a Gaussian beam through an apertured optical system.

Beam profiles that consist of a sum of complex-Gaussian functions, a sum of polynomial-Gaussian functions and a sum of multi-Gaussian functions offset by some fixed amount are proposed as three types of model for a hard-aperture function. By expanding an aperture function into these models, approximate analytical propagation equations for a Gaussian beam through an apertured ABCD optical system are obtained. Comparison among these models themselves and among propagation characteristics of a Gaussian beam through these models are made. It is shown that the first and third types of model for a hard-aperture function are more suitable than the second type, in terms of calculation efficiency and simulation results, for application to such diffraction problems. Moreover, there are some differences in the applicability of the first and the third models.

Wigner distribution function of Hermite-cosine-Gaussian beams through an apertured optical system.

By introducing the hard-aperture function into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, the approximate analytical expressions of the Wigner distribution function for Hermite-cosine-Gaussian beams passing through an apertured paraxial ABCD optical system are obtained. The analytical results are compared with the numerically integrated ones, and the absolute errors are also given. It is shown that the analytical results are proper and that the calculation speed for them is much faster than for the numerical results.

Controllable dark-hollow beams and their propagation characteristics.

A new mathematical model called "controllable dark-hollow beams" is introduced to describe hollow beams. The central dark size of this beam can be controlled easily by the beam order N and parameter epsilon. An analytical formula is derived for the propagation of a controllable dark-hollow beam through a paraxial optical system, and some numerical calculations are carried out. Some important propagation characteristics of this beam, such as the beam propagation factor and the kurtosis parameter, are studied in detail, and their variation rules versus the beam order N and parameter epsilon are presented and plotted.

Mode properties produced by a corner-cube cavity.

The laser mode properties of a corner-cube resonator, in which the corner cube is the key element and a flat mirror is used as the output mirror, are analyzed by a numerical simulating method. Examples of numerical calculations are given to illustrate mode propagation through an optical system. The simulated results agree with the experimental ones.

Propagation of Laguerre-Gaussian and elegant Laguerre-Gaussian beams in apertured fractional Hankel transform systems.

On the basis of the fact that a hard-edged-aperture function can be expanded into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, approximate analytical expressions for the output field distribution of a Laguerre-Gaussian beam and an elegant Laguerre-Gaussian beam passing through apertured fractional Hankel transform systems are derived. Some numerical simulation comparisons are done, by using the approximate analytical formulas and diffraction integral formulas, and it is shown that our method can significantly improve the numerical calculation efficiency.
