[Etiopathogeneic aspects of inhibition. Psychodynamic approach to inhibition].

From a psychodynamic point of view it is not sure that the meaning of the term inhibition differs radically from the meaning of the same term when it is used in psychophysiology. It is stated in this paper that the psychodynamic point of view concerns the actions and inhibitions which can be seen as the non activation of an action with the substitution of a deplacement action. Inhibition of actions can be investigated in three clinical fields: intrapsychic and external conflicts, depressive reaction and psychotic lack of energy. It is clear that the psychological mechanism is not the same in the three kinds of disorders. In a second part, the authors try to bridge the gap between the psychodynamic point of view and the psychophysiological one.

[Study of a beta-adrenergic stimulant and its antidepressant activity in man].

In animals, the psychopharmacological profile of beta-adrenergic stimulants is very similar to that of tricyclic antidepressants. In patients, more particularly in endogenous depressive patients, the antidepressant effect of salbutamol was very clear. A definite improvement was observed in all of the 22 studied patients after 1 to 3 days of intermittent venous infusion. The place of salbutamol in the therapeutic armamentarium of depressive states has still to be defined exactly. It is speculated that the antidepressant effect of imipramine-like derivatives is related to the stimulation of central beta 2-adrenergic receptors.

[Subacute excitation caused by probable herpetic encephalitis. Favorable effects of lithium].

Herpetic encephalitis in a 16 year old adolescent of average intelligence up to then and having had no psychiatric disorders. 3 years later, the subacte hypomanic excitation like behaviour disorder, distrubed alimentary and sexual behaviour rendered maintenance in the family environment and professional activity difficult; and this in spite of the absence of membory disorders, and the preservation of verbal and pragmatagnosic possibilities. Use of lithium led to the progressive sedation of the behaviour disorders and enabled return to work of the patient in a protected environment. This favorable action of lithium in a state of excitation of organic origin seems to be situated in the present stream of research which is attempting to enlarge the indications for it beyond manic depressive psychosis.

[Sensation seeking and mood dimensions in depressive states].

This study presents the investigation of the relations between dimensions of depressive mood and sensations seeking in 55 hospitalized depressed subjects. The concept of sensation seeking, identified by M. Zuckerman as a personality dimension, has been defined as the need for the subject to reach his optimal level of activation. The four subscores of sensation seeking, relatively independent, are identified in the sensation seeking scale; they stand at different levels on the dimensions of activation and pleasure which are emotional dimensions. These emotional dimensions are investigated in the exploration of the emotional components of depressive mood; the different symptomatic regroupings, such as blunted affect or impulsivity, do not have the same relations with these dimensions. The sensation seeking concept appears fruitful to investigate the different troubles of affective dynamic, which stand on the expressive and behavioral level, and on the subjective level. As in several studies with normal populations, we find again the same inverse relation between age and sensation seeking, and men obtain higher scores on the Thrill and Adventure seeking factor and on the Desinhibition factor. Globally, depressed subjects have lower scores of sensation seeking than normal subjects (paired by age and sex); but the weakness of sensation seeking is not proportional to the intensity of depression (Hamilton Depressive Scale) and to the the intensity of anxiety (Covi Brief Anxiety Scale). Interesting relations appear with the depressive mood factors, which agree with previous studies of sensation seeking in psychology and psychopathology.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Organization of the mental lexicon in 12 schizophrenic subjects].

Using different tasks to test the organization of the mental lexicon in schizophrenics patients we tried to confirm the non organization of their mental lexicon as underlied by different authors and to show a wrong exploitation of their semantic competences. Our findings pointed out the difficulties of the evaluated lexical competences exploitation rather than the disturbances of these competences themselves.

[The WP scale, an evaluation scale of anxious inhibition].

The phenomenon of inhibition concerns a feeling of being blocked in usual functioning. It is frequently encountered, in many disorders. Using a general model of anxiety, the authors propose a taxonomy of the phenomenon into inhibition in anxiety states and inhibition associated with other disorders, a differentiation between generalized inhibition and specific inhibition, and between primary and secondary inhibition. Generalized inhibition due to anxiety can be assessed through use of the WP, which is a rating scale developed for this purpose by the authors.

[Heterogeneity of the depressive mood. Construction of a polydimensional scale].

The evaluation of depressive mood implies several levels of the clinician's inferences: behaviour observation, subjective experience report, affective communication... The authors report the first stages in the construction of a specific depressive mood scale administered to a major depressive disorder population of 52 patients meeting DSM III criteria. The principal component analysis splits mood into three main factors: dysphoria, expressed sadness, emotional blunting. These various emotional dimensions should be taken into account for the analysis of drugs effects.
