A clinical investigation on massage for prevention and treatment of recurrent respiratory tract infection in children.

The TCM therapeutic principle of "eliminating the pathogenic factors by supporting the healthy energy" was adopted in massage to treat and prevent recurrent respiratory tract infection of children. Susceptible and healthy children of the same age were used as controls. As a result, the therapeutic effect of the treatment group is significantly better than that of the controls, with all of the immunologic indexes being approximately normal when the patients were reexamined 3 and 6 months after the massage. Statistically, the difference was significant (P < 0.01). Massage has been proved very helpful in improving the general constitution, enhancing the immune functions, preventing and treating the condition, and in health care as well.

Treatment of atrophic cholecystitis by regulating the function of the spleen--a report of 50 cases.

Fifty cases of atrophic cholecystitis were treated mainly by regulation of the function of the spleen. Of them, 21 cases were cured, 18 markedly effective, and 7 effective. The total effective rate was 92.0%. By comparison of results of ultrasonography B performed before and after treatment, it was shown that both the longitudinal and transverse inner diameters of gallbladder cross section increased evidently, and the condition of atrophy was improved remarkably after treatment.

[The influence of different concentrations of hydrofluoric acid on blood calcium level in rats].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of different concentration of hydrofluoric acid (HF) on local skin and calcium level of serum. METHODS: SD rats were divided into two groups which were wounded by 20% and 40% percent of HF respectively. Samples of blood and wound tissue were harvested at different postburn time for the analysis of the calcium level of the serum and histological study. RESULTS: It was found that twenty percent of HF was enough to cause a skin damage, and might bring about fatal hypocalcemia after a prolonged contact. High concentration of HF (40%) could cause deep tissue necrosis within a short time, and result in a fatal hypocalcemia within 24 hour even in the case of a small area injury. CONCLUSION: It is important to treat the patient with HF injury as early as possible. Sufficient calcium must be applied guided by laboratory study in order to prevent the fatal hypocalcemia.

[The study on relationship between fetal blood flow velocity waveforms and cord blood gas analyses in normal full term pregnancy].

OBJECTIVE: To study the relationship between fetal blood flow velocity waveforms and cord blood gas values in normal full term pregnancy. METHODS: Fetal umbilical artery (UA) and middle cerebral artery (MCA) and abdominal aorta (AbAo) flow velocity waveforms were measured in 45 full term fetuses 24 hrs before selective cesarean section. Resistance index (RI) and pulse index (PI) were calculated, cord blood samples were obtained from the umbilical artery at cesarean section and blood gas values were measured immediately. RESULTS: (1) UA RI had a significant negative correlation with pH and PO2, and a positive correlation with PCO2. (2) MCA RI had a significant positive correlation with pH and PO2, and a negative correlation with PCO2. CONCLUSION: A Doppler study of fetal blood flow velocity waveforms would be a useful method in the evaluation of the fetal status in the uterus.

[Assessment of fetal maturation by epithelial growth factor in serum of pregnant women].

OBJECTIVE: To study the concentrations of human epithelial growth factor (EGF), progesterone (P) in serum, and EGF, P, amylase (Ams), creatinine (Cr) and total bilirubin (TB) in amniotic fluid at different trimester normal pregnancy. METHODS: The concentrations of EGF, P in serum of 181 cases of pregnant women (first trimester 35, midtrimester 69, late trimester 77) and the concentrations of EGF, P, Ams, Cr, TB in amniotic fluid of 87 cases (mid-trimester 44, late trimester 43) were determined. At the same time, the concentrations of EGF, P in serum of umbilical veins and arteries from 23 full term neonates were determined as well. The concentrations of EGF and P were measured by radioimmunoassay and Ams, Cr, TB in amniotic fluid by PA110 autobiochemistry analyzer. RESULTS: (1) The concentrations of EGF, P in serum increased as pregnancy advanced. (2) There were significant correlations between EGF level and Ams, Cr levels in amniotic fluid. After 32 gestational weeks, the fetal maturity rate was 70.59% when EGF was > or = 4.5 micrograms/L. There were significant positive correlations between EGF in maternal serum and in amniotic fluid, (3) The maternal serum EGF concentration was significantly higher than that in the umbilical vessels, and there was positive correlations between them. CONCLUSION: The change of maternal serum concentration could be used to determine the fetal maturation.

[Investigation of hepatitis B virus infection in blood donors].

To investigate the status of HBV-M and HBV DNA in blood donors, 583 serum samples were detected by ELISA technique and polymerase chain reaction. The results were that hepatitis B virus marker(HBV-M) positive rate was 55.9%(326/583), HBV DNA 9.78%(57/583). The data indicate that there is high incidence of HBV infection in blood donors. The donors should be strictly tested for HBV in the future.

[Rejection of non-immunogenic tumor cells transfected with costimulatory molecule B7 after treatment with IFN-gamma in vitro].

OBJECTIVE: To explore immuno-gene-therapy of non-immunogenic tumor. METHODS: Non-immurogenic tumor cells B16 were transfected with B7-1 gene. The B7-1 gene transfected B16 cells (B7+ B16) were treated with recombinant murine interferon-gamma (rmIFN-gamma) in vitro, and then inoculated to C57BL/6 mice. RESULTS: While B7+ B16 cells grew progressively in syngeneic mice, tumorigenicty was significantly reduced when B7+ B16 cells were treated with rmIFN-gamma before inoculation to mice. Flow cytometric analysis of the rmIFN-gamma treated B7+ B16 cells showed significant up-regulation of MHC class I expression. CONCLUSION: For non-immunogenic tumor if the expressions of MHC class I molecules is low, providing co-stimulatory molecule B7 is not enough to reduce tumorigenicity. The B7-1 gene transfected B16 cells become non-tumorigenic or weakly tumorigenic when their MHC class I is up-regulated.

[Activation of CD4 T lymphocyte and release of interleukin-5 in airway from patients with atopic asthmatics].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the action of CD4T cell and release of interleukin-5 in airway from patients with atopic asthma by the allergen-specific stimulation. METHODS: Twelve atopic asthmatics (AA), 9 atopic non-asthmatics (AN), and 10 normal controls(N) underwent whole-lung inhalation challenge with house dust mite allergen (HDM) extract. The Levels of CD4CD25T lymphocytes, eosinophils(EOS), interleukin-5 (IL-5) and eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were investigated with and without HDM challenge. RESULTS: AA differed from AN in having late airway reactions (LAR) after HDM inhalation (P < 0.01), which was correlated with an percentage of BAL eosinophils, CD4CD25T cell IL-5 production and ECP release. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that the activation of CD4T lymphocytes is correlated with both asthmatic and atopic status. The allergen-specific stimulation is believed to play a major role in CD4 T cell activation in atopic asthma. IL-5 is selective cytokine for EOS activation and modulating local eosinophil recruitment and activation in airway.

[Nasal inverted papilloma and human papilloma virus].

In order to elucidate the relationship of human papilloma virus (HPV) infection and pathogenesis of nasal inverted papilloma (IP) and its malignant transformation, 36 cases of IP and 16 cases IP with squamous cell carcinoma (IP + SCC) were detected for HPV related sequence with Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method. HPV related sequence were found in 21 of 36 (58.3%) cases of IP and in 11 of 16 (68.8%) cases of IP + SCC. The difference of positive rates of HPV in IP and IP + SCC were not significant statistically. The results suggested that HPV infection may play an important role in the pathogenesis of IP, and other factor(s) may be needed in the IP malignant transformation in addition to HPV infection.

[Effects of gentamicin on survival and neuritogenesis of cultured mouse spiral ganglion cells].

The effect of gentamicin on survival and neuritogenesis of cultured spiral ganglion cell(SGC) from NIH mouse 1-5 days after birth was observed. Different doses (25, 50 and 100 mg/L) of gentamicin were add to the medium of SGC, and cultured for 14 days. After that, the specimen was fixed with 4% paraformaldehyde and stained with toluidine blue. The amount of survival SGC was counted, and the length of neurite was measured with micrometer under microscope. It was shown that the survival and length of neurite of SGC had no difference between Gentamicin treated groups and control groups, and there were also no difference among 3 gentamicin treated groups. It was suggested that gentamicin had no effect on survival and neuritogenesis of SGC. The effects of aminoglycoside antibiotics on SGC were probably secondary to the injury of Corti's Organ.

Lidocaine improving the cerebral protection by retrograde cerebral perfusion.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether lidocaine can improve the cerebral protection provided by retrograde cerebral perfusion. METHODS: Sixteen mongrel dogs were placed on cardiopulmonary bypass and cooled to 20 degrees C. Retrograde cerebral perfusion was then carried out for 120 minutes, with the external jugular venous pressure kept at 3.33 kPa. Cardiopulmonary bypass was resumed, and the animals were rewarmed to 36 degrees C. The animals were divided into two groups. In the lidocaine group (n = 8), lidocaine was administrated continuously throughout the experiment. In the control group (n = 8), normal saline was given at the same rate. RESULTS: In both groups, cerebral tissue creatine phosphate and adenosine triphosphate concentrations and energy charge increased by the end of hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass, decreased continuously during retrograde cerebral perfusion, and recovered gradually after resuming cardiopulmonary bypass. Nevertheless, they recovered to significantly higher levels in the lidocaine group than in the control group (creatine phosphate: 2.44 +/- 0.53 versus 1.61 +/- 0.49 mumol/g wet weight, P = 0.006; adenosine triphosphate: 0.71 +/- 0.18 versus 0.50 +/- 0.17 mumol/g wet weight, P = 0.029; energy charge: 0.59 +/- 0.10 versus 0.48 +/- 0.09, P = 0.044) by the end of the experiment. There was no significant difference between the two groups in the cerebral tissue water content (control group: 77.6% +/- 1.9%; lidocaine group: 77.6% +/- 1.3%). CONCLUSION: Continuous lidocaine infusion accelerates the recovery of cerebral tissue high energy phosphate contents after resuming cardiopulmonary bypass, but it has no effect on the formation of cerebral edema after retrograde cerebral perfusion.

[Detection of the p53 protein accumulation and p53 gene mutation in squamous cell carcinoma of the lung].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of p53 protein accumulation and p53 gene mutation in the pathogenesis of squamous cell carcinoma of lung. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry and PCR-SSCP techniques were used to detect p53 protein accumulation and p53 gene mutation. RESULTS: p53 protein accumulations was found in 52.5% (63/120) of the samples. p53 gene mutation was detected in 56.7% (68/120) of the same specimens by PCR-SSCP. In 24 cases (35.3%, 24/68), the mutations was locating on exon 5, 11 cases (16.2%, 11/68) on exon 6, 18 cases (26.5%, 18/68) on exon 7 and 15 cases (22.1%, 15/68) on exon 8 respectively. The rate of p53 gene mutation/overexpression was 60%. p53 gene mutation/overexpression rate of moderately (63.6%, 28/44) or poorly (63.5%, 40/63) differentiated pulmonary squamous cell carcinoma was significantly higher than that of the well differentiated carcinoma (30.8%, 4/13). In comparing with non-lymph node metastasis group (43.1%, 28/65), p53 gene mutation/overexpression rate in metastasis group (80%, 44/55) was significantly higher. p53 gene mutation/overexpression rate of pulmonary squamous cell carcinoma in advanced stage (76.3%, 45/59) was significantly higher than that in the early stage (44.3%, 27/61). p53 gene mutation/overexpression rate in heavy smoking group (72.4%, 55/76) was significantly higher than that in non-smoking group (38.6%, 17/44). No statistically significant correlation was found between p53 gene mutation/overexpression and sex, age, tumor location or invasion of the surrounding tissue. CONCLUSIONS: p53 gene mutation/overexpression may play an important role in the pathogenesis of squamous cell carcinoma of lung and can be considered as a predicting marker of prognosis.

[Diagnosis and surgical treatment of tuberculosis of mesentric lymph nodes].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnosis, operative indication and therapeutic result of tuberculosis of mesentric lymph nodes. METHOD: Fifty-nine cases with tuberculosis of mesentric lymph nodes surgically treated at two hospitals from July 1976 to July 1997 were retrospectively analyzed. RESULT: Only 14 cases were correctly diagnosed before operation. Operative treatment for the tuberculosis of mesentric lymph nodes represented a safe, effective treatment with few complications and no operative death. CONCLUSION: Because patients with tuberculosis of mesentric lymph nodes show no characteristic manifestations, laboratory methods (e.g. polymerase chain reaction), peritoneoscopy, CT scanning and B mode ultrosound techniques should also be considered for diagnosis of the disease. The acute or chronic ileus, hemorrhage of digestive tract, intestinal perforation or fistula, intra-abdominal large tuberculous abscess and abdominal sinus caused by tuberculosis of mesentric lymph nodes should be surgically treated. The exploratory laparotomy also should be performed on the patients with abdominal mass or those whose diagnosis of neoplasm could not be ruled out. The postoperative antituberculosis chemotherapy should be continued to decrease the occurrence of complications.

[Encephalic morphologic changes due to delayed traumatic intracerebral hematoma].

Pathological changes of brain tissues due to delayed traumatic intracerebral hematoma (DTICH) in 6 cases were studied and the mechanism was discussed. It was observed that DTICH went with old brain contusion, traumatic angionecrosis, vasculitis, calcification, encapsulated old focus, proliferation and reactive hypertrophy in glia. Brain contusions and traumatic vessel lesions are important pathological foundations of cerebral hemorrhage and primary causes of DTICH.
