The symptom as metaphor in Lacan's theory of the unconscious.

An analysis of Freud's forgetting of the name Signorelli provides a framework for an explication of some central concepts in Lacan's theory of the unconscious. The parapraxis is viewed as a symptom which is structured like a metaphor. The creation of a symptom during the process of repression produces a gap in conscious discourse. The analysis of such symptoms provides evidence for Lacan's assertion that the unconscious is structured like a language.

Psoas abscess.

A psoas abscess is infrequently diagnosed on initial presentation. This report reviews the presentation of a patient with a complicated psoas abscess. The pathophysiology and the clinical and laboratory presentation of patients with this disease entity are reviewed.

Acute poisoning by a barium chloride burn.

A 62-year-old man sustained a barium chloride burn after his jackhammer penetrated a pocket of molten barium chloride. He subsequently developed signs of systemic barium poisoning including bigeminy and hypokalemia. Treatment consisted of early thorough debridement and intravenous potassium supplementation. Serum barium levels were determined. In a review of the literature these appeared to be the first toxic barium levels to be reported. The literature concerning barium poisoning and its complications is reviewed and related to the clinical presentation and treatment of this chemically burned patient.

Evaluation of proteinuria.

Proteinuria may be the initial manifestation of serious renal disease or merely a laboratory finding of little clinical importance. Excretion of urinary protein in excess of 150 mg per 24 hours in an adult is abnormal. It may be of glomerular, tubular or overflow origin. A comparison of the dipstick and sulfosalicylic acid techniques helps distinguish the source of protein, and electrophoresis is confirmatory. Transient and intermittent proteinuria are not clinically important. Persistent proteinuria requires further investigation.

The factorial structure of the ITPA and WISC subtests in three diagnostic groups.

An image analysis of the ITPA and WISC Subtest Scores of three diagnostic groups was done. In two of the diagnostic groups, a regular classroom group and an LLD group, a general linguistic factor, a visual-motor factor, and a mediation factor appeared to emerge. A general ITPA factor, a general WISC factor, and an expressive factor were extracted from the mentally retarted group's data. Differences among the factors of diagnostic groups were observed and commented upon after a canonical correlation of factor loading matrices.

Staff characteristics associated with likeableness on an adolescent treatment unit.

Personality characteristics including subtest scores from the 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire (16 PF), California Personality Inventory, and Tennessee Self-concept Scale were related to the rated likeableness of staff members of an adolescent treatment unit. Likeableness was assessed by students participating in the treatment program. Correlated were likeableness of staff members and staff members' self-esteem, responsiblity, social awareness, and lack of acquiescent response tendencies.

The battle over blood collection.

The struggle for control of this nation's life-giving blood resources was, up until five years ago, largely a private affair between representative organizations of the blood collectors. The system that emerged from that struggle was declared unhealthy by several experts who complained that blood was too often unsafe or unavailable. Then in 1972 the government, predominantly the federal government, responded to public pressure and joined the fray. This Comment examines some legal, political, and policy aspects of the battle over blood collection--a battle from which no stable guiding force has yet evolved.

Diffusive resistances at, and transpiration rates from leaves in situ within the vegetative canopy of a corn crop.

At several heights and times of day within a crop of Zea mays, internal leaf diffusion resistance (r(i)) and external boundary layer diffusion resistance (r(a)) were evaluated by measuring the temperature of a transpiring and a non-transpiring leaf (simulated by covering both sides of a normal leaf with strips of poly-ethylene tape), and by measuring the immediate air temperature, humidity and windspeed. Both r(a) and r(i) increased with depth into the crop. However, r(a) generally was less than 10% of r(i).Profiles of latent-heat flux density and source intensity of transpiration showed that transpiration corresponded roughly to foliage distribution (with an upward shift) and were not similar to the profile of radiation absorption. The data were compared with heat budget data. The 2 approaches yielded quite similar height distributions of transpiration per unit leaf area and total transpiration resistance. The total crop resistance to transpiration was computed as 0.027 min cm(-1). This compares to Monteith's values of 0.017 to 0.040 min cm(-1) for beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), and Linacre's values of 0.015 to 0.020 min cm(-1) for turf.
