Fluidised-bead bed in the intensive-therapy unit.

The fluidised-bead bed is a novel way of managing patients in the intensive-therapy unit (ITU) with various nursing problems. It is particularly suitable for the management of pressure areas and for patients at the extremes of weight range. Theoretically, the bed is a way of reducing catabolism, but this has so far not been properly investigated.

Miconazole as a treatment for Candida septicaemia.

Two case histories are presented illustrating the difficulties of treating candida septicaemia. The factors which may have predisposed to its development are reviewed. Miconazole a new antifungal agent was used with dramatic response.

Anaesthesia for bronchography in small children.

General anaesthesia is infrequently requested for bronchography in small children. The clinical indications, recommendations for the anaesthetic technique, and problems associated with the investigation are discussed.

Facial myokymia.

Facial myokymia is an uncommon form of dyskinesia, usually resulting from a lesion in the brain stem. The electromyogram is typical. A case is reported. The condition was due to an astrocytoma of the brain stem.

Preoperative serum cholinesterase concentration in chronic renal failure. Clinical experience of suxamethonium in 81 patients undergoing renal transplant.

Serum cholinesterase concentrations were measured in 181 patients in chronic renal failure. Significant differences in cholinesterase concentrations were not found in patients undergoing dialysis and changes appear to be independent of the method of treatment used. Clinical experience with suxamethonium to facilitate tracheal intubation was satisfactory in 80 patients undergoing renal transplant. Apnoea occurred in one patient who was found subsequently to have atypical cholinesterase inheritance.

Gonadotropin receptors. Solubilization and purification by affinity chromatography.

Specific gonadotropin receptors of the rat testis were purified 15,000-fold after detergent extraction by a single affinity chromatography step on agarose coupled to human chorionic gonadotropin. Receptors were eluted in the free form at pH 3.2 and did not aggregate in the absence of detergent. The purified receptors displayed about 50% of the maximum theoretical binding activity, and retained the high binding affinity and hormonal specificity of the original gonadotropin receptors of the cell membrane.

Malignant hyperpyrexia: Investigation of a family after a fatal case.

The relatives of a patient who died from malignant hyperpyrexia were examined clinically and biochemically. One fo the deceased's children, an identical twin, undergoing an anesthetic, was found to develop malignant hyperpyrexia on exposure to nitrous oxide. The creatine phosphokinase concentrations in this family were unhelpful as a method of identifying susceptible individuals.
