[Echocardiographic study of the effects of a nitroglycerin microcapsule preparation (author's transl)].

An echocardiographic study performed on 15 patients after administration of sublingual nitroglycerin showed a significant decrease in internal diameters of the left ventricle, associated with a moderate fall in blood pressure. A significant, but smaller decrease in diameters was also found 3 to 4 hours after oral administration of a nitroglycerin microcapsule preparation. The parameters measuring cardiac performance and the quality of myocardial contraction remained unchanged. The decrease in left ventricle internal diameters may be attributed to a reduction in pre-load and intraparietal ventricular tension. In addition, these results obtained by a non-invasive technique have confirmed the prolonged activity of nitroglycerin microcapsule preparations, previously demonstrated by hemodynamic and pharmacological experiments.

Theoretical and experimental study of an immobilized bienzyme system. Computer calculations and electron microscopy visualization of local concentration profiles.

A cytochemical method was used in order to visualize the existence of local concentrations of metabolites within an immobilized bienzyme system. Glucose oxidase (EC 1.1.3.4) and peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.7) were immobilized together into an artificial proteic membrane obtained by a previously described co-cross-linking process using a bifunctional agent, glutaraldehyde. The cytochemical reagent 3,3'-diaminobenzidine was used as a hydrogen donor substrate and kinetic studies were performed with both free and immobilized forms of the enzymes; in the latter case, a new direct method was introduced which allowed kinetic studies on the visualization system itself. From experimental kinetic parameters, theoretical concentrations profiles were calculated by computer using numerical analysis methods. These results were discussed with special attention to the electron microscopic observations. Computer simulations were in good agreement with electron micrographs. No geometrical similarity was seen in our system between poly(3,3'-diaminobenzidine) precipitate distribution and peroxidase molecule homogeneous location.

Clinical psychology: an independent profession.

There are few clinical psychologists, just over 1,000 in the NHS in England and Wales. Derek Thomas, Bernard Kat and Frank McPherson review the profession and argue that it should be organised on a district basis.

Stabilization of biological photosystems : immobilization of thylakoids and chromatophores for hydrogen production and ATP regeneration.

Lettuce thylakoïds were immobilized by the action of glutaraldehyde at subzero temperature in the presence of albumin. Foam structures with good mechanical properties were obtained. The activity yields for photosystem II and photosystems I + II were found equal to 71 per cent and 35 per cent respectively. The yield for ATP regeneration from ADP and Pi was 26 per cent. Increases of stability after immobilization were observed for all the functions of thylakoïds when stored and when continuously working. Spheroplasts and chromatophores from Rhodopseudomonas capsulata were immobilized with the same method; yields for ATP regeneration were found equal to 40 per cent and 70 per cent, respectively. An important increase of stability after immobilization was observed in both cases.

Knee-joint temperature measurement using a differential thermistor thermometer.

A simple method for measuring joint inflammation with a differential thermistor probe thermometer was applied to acute synovitis of the knee. Temperature assessments were made immediately before and serially after intra-articular steroid therapy. The method was capable of showing a significant difference in temperature between inflamed and normal knees. Knee temperature assessments correlated well with clinical parameters and were essentially independent of room temperature.

A histochemical model dealing with an immobilized glucose oxidase-peroxidase system. The influence of diffusion limitations on histochemical results.

A histochemical model dealing with an immobilized bienzyme system (glucose oxidase-peroxidase) is presented. The model is an artificial proteic membrane obtained by a previously described co-cross-linking process. The kinetic properties of free and immobilized horseradish peroxidase were studied when 3,3'-diaminobenzidine is used as a hydrogen donor substrate. A new direct method was developed for immobilized enzyme activity measurements. Computer simulation based on experimental kinetic parameters was performed in order to discuss electron microscopy results. By changing diffusion limitations, various profiles of insoluble product were visualized inside the proteic film and no geometrical similarity was seen between enzyme distributions and insoluble osmiophilic product patterns.

[Cytochemical and autoradiographic ultrastructural study of the hairy cell].

The ribosomal nature of the Hairy cell's Ribosome lamella Complex is given by cytochemical ultrastructural reactions. Using Autoradiography after tritiated uridine incubation no labelling was observed on the nucleolus and in the ribosome lamella Complex. Abnormalities in protein synthesis are thus demonstrated.

[Contribution of data processing to hospital archives. Cardiological experience].

Access to essential information characterising the clinical condition of a patient and the course of that condition is an advance which physicians have long expected from data Processing to meet a certain number of needs: follow up of the patient, organisation of medical secretariat, file selection, help to clinical thought, etc. This typically documentary activity raises a problem of data representation classically solved by the use of clinical information classified beforehand: questionnaires or nomenclatures. This article reports on the use of a truly medical language: REMEDE, a the end of one year's operation in a cardiac department; the automatic processing of 173 coronary angiographies shows the interest, efficiency and flexibility of such a system of automated hospital archives.
