Seizures terminable and interminable with ECT.

The authors discuss the incidence, detection, management, and significance of prolonged seizures with ECT and present a case example. They suggest that the incidence of this phenomenon may be underreported and that its occurrence may be linked to hyperoxygenation, the use of multiple-monitored ECT, and preexisting states of cerebral hyperexcitability. Since prolonged seizures may result in adverse metabolic changes, prompt detection and intervention are essential.

Group aftercare for chronic schizophrenia.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of group follow-up in the aftercare of chronic schizophrenia. Fifteen outpatient schizophrenics were reviewed to compare their rehospitalization rates and percentage of time spent in the community during a 2 year period of group aftercare with the 2 year per-group period. Rehospitalization rates were 0.2 admissions/patient year during the group therapy period versus 1.1 admissions/patient year during the pre-group period ( less than .001). Attendance compliance rates during the group therapy were 97%. The results suggest that for these patients, group therapy was an effective method of maintaining schizophrenics in the community.

Remarriage probability after widowhood: a retrospective method.

A technique was devised to estimate age specific remarriage probabilities for newly widowed persons utilizing North Carolina marriage certificates plus informatiom from the 1970 U. S. Census. Remarriage probabilities are very high for persons widowed before age 35. Remarriage probabilities decrease faster for widows than widowers. Less than one-fourth of men widowed after age 65 ever remarry. Less than 5% of women widowed after age 55 ever remarry. Age specific intervals to remarriage were also calculated. Men remarry more quickly than women. The median interval to remarriage was 1.7 years for men and 3.5 years for women.
