An evaluation of an education programme on HIV infection using puppetry and street theatre.

'Puppets Against AIDS' is a novel educational medium being used to try to reduce the spread of HIV infection in South Africa. It involves the use of street theatre employing two-metre-high puppets who act out a story of how one person, who is infected with HIV, passes it onto a series of other people until he eventually dies. The puppet show was evaluated in two phases. The first involved a content analysis of a video recording of the show by a multidisciplinary group, according to a set of criteria for appropriate education on HIV infection. This show was found to be professional and comprehensive in terms of the educational messages provided. Some suggestions were made for improvements. The second phase was a before and after study of the impact on the audience at a series of live shows. The show made a significant contribution to knowledge and intended behaviour in the short term. Overall it was felt that the show does make a valuable contribution, but could be made more effective if incorporated into existing community-based education programmes on HIV infection.

Do patients presenting to accident and emergency departments have low serum anticonvulsant concentrations?

It is often felt that poorly controlled epileptic patients, who are taking anticonvulsant medication, are over represented in A&E departments compared to the general population. This A&E based study set out to determine whether such patients do have inadequate serum anticonvulsant levels, when they present following a seizure, to A&E departments. All epileptic patients, taking medication, who presented to the A&E departments of St. Bartholomew's and Hackney Hospitals, London, over a 4-month period were studied. Serum anticonvulsant concentrations were measured on their arrival in the departments. Forty-six patients were studied. Only 21% of anticonvulsant drug concentrations were within 'therapeutic' ranges. A total of 66% were below 'therapeutic' ranges and 13% were potentially toxic. The implication of these findings is discussed.

The consequences for preschool children of a parent's detention: a preliminary South African clinical study of caregivers' reports.

Semi-structured interviews on the consequences for preschool children of a parent's detention were conducted with primary caregivers of 19 South African children aged 2-6 yrs. Caregivers reported emotional problems, separation anxiety and fear as well as physical problems, aggression, secondary enuresis and developmental difficulties. Adaptive mechanisms are described. Fantasies focused chiefly on children's images of the detention situation, and on plans to alter current circumstances. Children who felt secure in the environment seemed generally to adjust better to the experience, particularly in the long term.

Dose-related effects of central noradrenaline stimulation on behavioural arousal in rats.

The general activity of rats in an open field test situation was observed following the central administration of isotonic saline and 0.5 and 2.0 mug of noradrenaline into the locus coeruleus. A significant increase in activity was found following the 0.5 mug, but not the 2.0 mug dose. The results are consistent with other reports indicating that low doses of centrally administered noradrenaline produce behavioural arousal whereas higher doses may result in behavioural depression. In addition, these findings suggest that the noradrenergic neurons arising from the locus coeruleus may be important for the arousal status of rats.
