A ten-year study of volvulus of the sigmoid colon is presented. Although the results of treatment of volvulus of the sigmoid colon are generally improving, the challenge for further improvement remains.
A study to determine the incidence of alkaline reflux gastritis in forty postoperative duodenal ulcer patients has been presented. Since the majority of patients had evidence of gastritis, the precise role that gastritis plays in the production of symptoms is discussed but needs further clarification. It is suggested that the presence of gastritis may only represent an incidental or associated finding in many patients presenting with symptoms presumably characteristics of alkaline reflux gastritis.
A critical analysis of 52 patients with cancer of the esophagus indicates the continuing challenge that this disease entity presents to the surgeon and radiotherapist. Difficulty of cure or palliation is further compounded by the many significant associated medical problems found in certain patient populations, such as that characteristic of our VA Hospital. Although cure is a rarity in cancer of the esophagus, continued palliative efforts must be exerted for these otherwise hopeless patients.

The precise role lumbar sympathectomy plays in the treatment of uncomplicated intermittent claudication continues to be debated. Past experience at this institution indicates that lumbar sympathectomy has a definite positive role in uncomplicated intermittent claudication. A critical analysis of the 86 patients included in this study adds further support to this contention. Properly selected patients who undergo complete anatomic sympathetic denervation of the lower limbs continue to have very satisfactory results, as they have since 1947 in this institution.

A study of the results of lumbar sympathectomy in the treatment of peripheral vascular occlusive disease has been presented. Results continue to be encouraging in properly selected patients, as they have been since 1947.
