John Dewey: implications for schooling.

Propositions, whether great and lasting or insignificant and passing, reside in the "guts of the living." Each age rediscovers its Plato, Dickens, Newton, or Dewey. Each age rewrites history, redefines science, develops its own theoretical perspectives. Propositions are tentative, conditional, or relative. They depend on contemporary priorities, and on a personal space and time context. At any future moment propositions may change, perspectives alter, new choices emerge. John Dewey provided for constructive innovation in schooling and the battles about his suggested criteria continue unabated. The purpose here, however, is only to examine some of Dewey's theoretical propositions and their probable implications (1).

Education↗

Toward program development.

An era of disciplined thinking may result not only in acknowledging but also in addressing those questions that may lead to a consistent examination of existing programs within a profession. This paper is one attemp at encouraging the professional membership to continue to address: 1. the nature and focus of the content and practice environments of the field of Occupational Therapy; 2. two approaches to investigating the distinctive character of the field of Occupational Therapy-the Separate Domain Approach and the Retroductive Approach; 3. and the basic documents developed and/or sponsored by the professional organization-in this case-The Ohio State Study (1), the NIH Study (2), and the Curriculum Guide (3).

Clinical Competence↗

Components in program development.

There has been a great deal of discussion and deliberation concerning the composition of program development. Nonetheless, the question still remains--what is program development? What are possible components in program development? In this paper the following components are described, differentiated, and integrated: Statement of Purpose, Curriculum Design, Program Competencies, Content, Content Competencies, and Practice Environments.

Clinicopathologic characterization of Herpesvirus saimiri malignant lymphoma in New Zealand white rabbits.

Twenty-two of 39 rabbits inoculated with Herpesvirus saimiri developed malignant lymphoma and either died or were killed between 17 and 165 days after inoculation. No clinical signs were present in animals developing the disease before 46 days, but all other rabbits had a severe conjunctivitis, nasal discharge, and dyspnea resulting from a lymphocytic invasion of the ocular and nasal tissues. Four rabbits developed terminal leukemia. Pathologically, the disease resembled H. saimiri malignant lymphoma in nonhuman primates; there was extensive diffuse infiltration of most organs and tissues with either a lymphocytic or lymphoblastic infiltrate. Tumor nodules or masses seen in some forms of malignant lymphoma were not present. In contrast to nonhuman primates, all affected rabbits showed invasion of the skin of the nose and eyelids, conjunctiva, iris, ciliary body, and choroid. In 3 rabbits there was slight infiltration into the brain, not noted in nonhuman primates. The susceptibility of rabbits extended the host range of H. saimiri beyond the order Primates.

Multiple Herpesvirus simiae isolation from a rhesus monkey which died of cerebral infarction.

A rhesus monkey housed in the New England Regional Primate Research Center for more than 4 yr died after an illness of 19 da. Clinical signs included central nervous system involvement and ulcers on the labial mucosa. Microscopically, the cause of death was established as multiple cerebral infarction. Lesions characteristic of herpesvirus infections were not present in the brain nor in any other tissue; however, Herpesvirus simiae was isolated from oral and anal swabs as well as from tongue and lung tissue. Inoculation of this agent in H simiae antibody negative rhesus monkeys resulted in infection, as indicated by virus isolation, serologic conversion, conjunctivitis, and development of ulcers at the mucoepithelial border, but fatal infection did not develop.
