Triacylglycerol biosynthesis in the adipose tissue of the obese-hyperglycaemic mouse.

Obesity in obese-hyperglycaemic mouse is associated with an increase in number and size of adipocytes. Adipocytes from the obese mouse showed increased incorporation of [14C]acetate and[14C]glucose into triacylglycerol. This increased capacity of triacylglycerol formation was correlated with increased activities of various triacylglycerol-forming enzymes measured in the microsomal fraction of adipose tissue from obese mice. Microsomal fractions from lean and obese mice contained sn-glycerol 3-phosphate acyltransferase, phosphatidate phosphohydrolase and diacylglycerol acyltransferase. Phosphatidate phosphohydrolase was also detected in the soluble fraction. In the presence of Mg2+, the phosphatidate phsophohydrolase from the soluble and the microsomal fractions was active towards membrane-bound phosphatidate. Among the three enzymes studied here, the increase in Mg2+-dependent phosphatidate phosphohydrolase was most prominent in adipose tissue of obese mice.

Methodology for teaching theory in occupational therapy basic professional education.

This article proposes a methodology for teaching theoretical concepts to undergraduate occupational therapy students. The methodology is based upon a learning theory and three conceptual models of psychosocial dysfunction. It is suggested that such a method will help students to understand theoretical principles and to develop the ability to apply these principles to treatment. This method has been used successfully by the authors in classroom instruction.

Dynamic and holistic ideas of neurosis and psychotherapy.

In this paper I want to discuss certain weaknesses of the traditional dynamic psychoanalytic conception of neurosis and their psychotherapeutic consequences. At the same time, I would like to advocate an alternative conception of neurosis, a holistic or characterological conception, and I will try to indicate some of the therapeutic ideas and practices which follow from it.

Detection of mild factor VIII Deficiency by thrombokinetics.

The maximal rate of change in optical density (Vmax-deltaOD)of plasma clots forming in the activated partial thromboplastin time test (APTT) may be significantly influenced by reductions in factor VIII activity insufficient to also cause a distinctly abnormal timed clotting endpoint. Analysis of relationships between Vmax-deltaOD of clotting plasma in the APTT, prothrombin time, and thrombin time tests provides a basis for increasing the screening value of the APTT in suggesting intrinsic system abnormalities. Three illustrative case reports support the added benefit of thrombokinetics in the detection of mild factor VIII deficiency in hemophilia A and in von Willebrand's disease.

Clinician attitudes toward the suicide attempter.

The clinical and sociodemographic characteristics and dispositional outcome of 248 suicide attempters were studied in a general hospital emergency room. A mood adjective checklist was completed by evaluating psychiatric residents and three orthogonal factor analytically derived mood clusters were related to sociodemographic, clinical, and dispositional variables. Residents expressed warmth toward patients having low suicide risk and limited overall psychopathology. They felt anxious toward patients with high suicidal risk and significant psychopathology. Angry feelings were reported toward patients with high suicidal risk in the absence of recent precipitating events. Residents reported warmth toward patients admitted to private or mental health center vs. state hospital facilities and tended to devote more time to their clinical assessment of these patients. Feelings of anxiety and anger characterized the responses to state hospital admissions who were only briefly assessed. The findings have implications for the organization of clinical services and the training of mental health professionals. Supervision needs to be directed to the recognition and modification of therapist emotional attitudes as well as to the understanding of patient psychopathology. Clinician feelings can then be effectively utilized to "capture" a high risk, high drop-out population into effective follow-up care.
