Nasal adenopapillomas were observed in 9 Y'anKasa and 1 Y'anKasa-Suffolk crossbred sheep (8 females and 2 males) over a 20-month period. The neoplasms originated from the epithelium of the lateral mass of the ethmoid bone. Gross and histologic features and clinical signs were similar in all cases. Influence of sex, age, or genetics was not established.

Field cases of East Coast fever in grade cattle in Uganda.

Case records were kept of 81 cattle suspected to be infected with East Coast fever. Microscopical confirmation was obtained in 66 animals and the fate of 65 of these was known. Forty-five cattle died or were slaughtered and 20 recovered. No significant difference in mortality was found in respect of age or grade. When the incidence of certain clinical signs in these two groups was compared, differences in respect of rectal temperature and observable vascular changes in certain visible mucous membranes were found. Enlargement of the superficial lymph nodes was the commonest clinical sign and the prescapular nodes were the most regularly involved. Drug treatment, where given, appeared ineffective. Among 20 recovered cases some were severely ill while others had very mild symptoms.

Deafness in middle age--how big is the problem?

Screening for hearing defect by questionnaire and audiogram was undertaken in two group practices in the South-east of England in a total of 2,278 people aged 40-64 years.The prevalence of deafness in the combined populations of these two practices as measured by audiogram was found to be 5.8 per cent (+/- 0.5 per cent; one standard error). This figure is much more than estimates derived from American data for use in Britain. The prevalence of deafness was shown to increase with lower social class and age. The questionnaire was found to be unreliable for prevalence studies, but was thought to have some use as a screening instrument.There was an incidental finding of increased hearing defects in the left ears of men. The firing of rifles was felt to be a possible explanation of this.

An alternative approach to the study of new enzymatic reactions involving DNA (DNA-dependent ATPases-purification-properties-E. coli).

Ordinarily, enzymes that catalyze bimolecular reactions involving DNA and nucleoside triphosphates are assayed in terms of the predicted changes in DNA. However, by assay of the enzymes by changes in nucleoside triphosphates, new enzymes may be sought without prior knowledge of the role of DNA in the reaction. This approach was used to isolate two new enzymes from Escherichia coli and one from T4 phage-infected E. coli. In this communication, the general application of this technique and its specific use in the isolation of two DNA-dependent ATPases from E. coli are described. Both enzymes catalyze a DNA-dependent cleavage of ATP to ADP and Pi. The two enzymes can be distinguished by their characteristic activities with different DNAs and synthetic polydeoxynucleotides. Neither of the enzymes shows endonuclease or exonuclease activity in conventional assays. These reactions were studied by isotope-exchange experiments. The discovery of these enzymes attests to the effectiveness of this method to seek new reactions involving nucleic acids. Moreover, our results suggest that other enzymes of nucleic acid metabolism may be found and purified by this new approach.
