The role of hemolysis in the anemia of chronic myelocytic leukemia (CML) remains controversial. The authors reviewed the records of 68 consecutive CML patients to evaluate occurrence and clinical significance of hemolysis. Thirty-one (46%) had increased fecal urobilinogen excretion, and this hemolysis group was compared with the remaining 37. There was no difference in age, presence of Philadelphia chromosome, thrombocytopenia, bleeding, occurrence of blast crisis, or chemotherapy in the two groups. There was no correlation between spleen size and hemolysis. Infections and administration of corticosteroids were more frequent in the hemolysis group. Hemolysis was a late complication and had an ominous prognosis, with a temporal association with blast crisis.
Dance shows promise as an efficient, effective, and exhilarating physical therapy modality, with inherent sources of motivation for long-term neurological and orthopedic patients in a hospital or community setting. Four years' experience in adapting dance to the purpose of therapy in a group setting is described. The dance program developed combines the theories and techniques of physical therapy with the expressive, creative, and intellectual challenge of dance using music and other artistic motivating stimuli. Several dimensions of the modality are discussed and positive results are noted, through concrete illustrations.
Mature sheep receiving supplements of sodium chloride into the rumen were given intravenous infusions of arginine vasopressin at rates varying from 4-6-23 pmol/min (2-10 mU/min). Infusion of the hormone led to an increase in urine flow and to increases in the amounts of sodium and chloride excreted, the effect on flow was, however, the greater so that the osmolality of the urine fell during the infusions. In sheep given intravenous infusions of a hypertonic sodium chloride solution addition of vasopressin to the infusate led to the formation of a larger volume of urine containing a higher proportion of the infused salt load compared to when the salt solution alone was given. As before the effect on flow was the greater and hence the osmolality of the urine was lower when the hormone was given. In other experiments intravenous infusion of a hypertonic sodium chloride solution at rates providing 2-8 mmol NaCl/min led to increases in urine flow and increases in sodium and chloride excretion, the size of these increases being proportional to infusion rate. Plasma vasopressin levels markedly increased during these infusions, the levels seen being similar to those seen in sheep given vasopressin in amounts which increased both urine flow and electrolyte excretion. This suggests that during hypertonic salt loading vasopressin probably contributes directly to the increases in urine flow and the increases in electrolyte excretion which are seen. Further evidence in support of this was obtained in experiments in which a greater natriuretic response was seen in sheep given a hypertonic sodium chloride solution into the carotid artery as opposed to the given a hypertonic sodium chloride solution into the carotid artery as opposed to the jugular vein and where it was shown that plasma vasopressin levels were indeed higher when the solution was given into the artery.

Fifty patients per million per annum in Australia suffer from end stage renal failure and could be helped by dialysis and transplantation. At the present time, only half this number are being referred to renal units in Australia where we believe facilities are available to help all that could benefit from this treatment. This article discusses patient selection, the results and hazards of renal transplantation. As a result of this treatment programme, 50 per cent of patients can expect virtually a normal life with a kidney graft functioning five years or more.
Four Finnish Landrace X Dorset Horn ewes were each given an intramuscular injection of 15 mg of dexamethazone on day 142 of gestation. Four ewes with the same fetal numbers were used as controls. Administration of the corticosteroid reduced the mean gestation length from 146-5 to 143-3 days and had no effect on the pre-lambing concentrations of Na, Cl, Ca P and Mg in the maternal plasma or on blood pH. There was a slight but significant (P less than 0-05) decrease in plasma K before lambing in the treated ewes. Plasma urea and glucose concentrations were not affected by treatment. There was a significant increase in the plasma concentration of glucose in both groups of ewes immediately after parturition.

Young pigs of about 25 kg in weight were given supplements of Na2HPO4 either in their food or by intravenous infusion and the effects on urinary phosphate excretion were studied. The results obtained showed that the amount of inorganic phosphate excreted in the urine increased with increase in the amount of phosphate filtered at the glomerulus. A threshold value for phosphate excretion in these pigs occurred at a plasma concentration of 2-03 mmol/l. while over a wide range of filtered phosphate load (0-21-1-14 mmol/min) phosphate was reabsorbed at a mean maximum rate of 0-19 mmol/min. Parathyroidectomy did not alter the relationship between phosphate excretion and filtered phosphate load which suggests that in the pig adjustment of renal phosphate excretion in relation to filtered load is not dependent upon parathormone.
