Relative increase of Langerhans cells in 'banal' and dysplastic melanocytic naevi.

Langerhans cell counts were carried out in 16 normal or banal melanocytic naevi and 22 dysplastic naevi, and the numbers in the naevi compared with Langerhans cell numbers in perilesional, clinically normal, epidermis. Langerhans cell numbers were found to be raised in both types of naevi, but no significant difference between Langerhans cell numbers in the two types of naevi was found.

Experimental bacteremia to demonstrate the barrier function of epithelium and connective tissue surrounding oral endosseous implants.

The barrier function of the peri-pillary epithelial-connective tissue cuff was experimentally tested with 12 endosseous metal blade vents in four beagles. An identified Staphylococcus aureus test strain was suspended in 0.5 ml saline. This bacterial suspension was then instilled into the sulcus of each implant. For stimulation of bacteremia the animals were fed with pelleted dry food. After 5 minutes, venous blood was drawn and incubated. After 72 hours of incubation none of the cultures showed bacterial growth of the test bacteria. In a second experiment 0.5 ml of the bacterial suspension was inoculated intravenously. After 1 h a bacteriological smear and peri-pillary tissue were taken. The specified Staphylococcus aureus was identified with phage typing in only on tissue specimen. This study demonstrates that the pseudo-attachment of the epithelial-connective tissue complex to the post of metal endosteal implants is functionable. Functionability, however, is endangered if biomechanical imbalance or infection occurs.

Grafting in dentistry today (author's transl).

Enossal grafts are common practice in dentistry. The prognosis of such grafts fluctuates between primary failure and 10 years, and is largely determined by the indication: the more accurate the indication, the better the prognosis! In partial diastemata in the lower jaw, satisfactory results for a longer time are to be expected if the concurrently blocked remaining denture is periodontally sound.

[Animal model for the etiopathogenesis of sialadenitis].

A longitudinal study with patient-specific jaw models and simultaneous X-Rays was undertaken to examine the eruption behaviour of the mandibular premolars following physiological and pathological resorption of the roots of primary teeth. 1. The molars of the first dentition fall out earlier after pathological resorption of the roots of primary teeth. In the presence of an occlusal bony bridge the appearance of a new tooth may take years. The eruption of the replacing tooth is delayed or it may be retained. 2. The eruption times of premolars after physiological resorption of primary tooth roots given in the literature and those obtained by the author converge. After pathological resorption of primary tooth roots and rarefying osteitis with interruption of the lamina dura, vertical development occurs significantly sooner (p less than 0,01). 3. The sequence of eruption of the premolars can be altered after pathological resorption of primary tooth roots.
