Modification and evaluation of the potato disc assay and antitumor screening of euphorbiaceae seeds.

Galsky et al. (10, 11) have reported that the inhibition and growth of crown gall tumors, initiated on potato discs by Agrobacterium tumefaciens, apparently has good agreement with 3PS in vivo antileukemic activity in mice. We have now modified and evaluated this assay for its potential use as a prescreen and fractionation monitor of plant extracts for 3PS activity. The modified assay was performed on a series of natural compounds and plant extracts (known to have 3PS activity) and on extracts of seeds of 41 Euphorbiaceae species. The results suggest that the potato disc assay is a safe, simple, rapid, in-house, low cost, prescreen for 3PS antitumor activity; it detects some false positives, but few false negatives; it is statistically much more predictive (p = 0.002) of 3PS activity than either the 9KB (p = 0.140) or the 9PS (p = 0.114) cytotoxicity assays. Its extended use could easily obviate the expense and extensive need for animals in the initial stages of antitumor screening and plant fractionation.

Nursing care of the pregnant woman with diabetes mellitus.

The woman with diabetes who becomes pregnant faces increased risk of morbidity, urinary tract infections, vaginitis, difficult delivery, hemorrhage, cesarean section, preeclampsia, and hydramnios. Chronic disease alone produces emotional tension. Added to this she has increased general life stresses such as added financial responsibility, increases time commitments, and changes in lifestyle demands. The infant of the diabetic is often large for dates, faces respiratory distress syndrome with early delivery, may experience hypoglycemia, and may have fetal anomalies. Clinical specialists of nursing, consulting and working together, can develop a plan of nursing care for the pregnant woman with diabetes. Because the pregnant diabetic woman faces the usual adjustments to pregnancy plus problems dealing with a chronic condition of diabetes, nursing care should combine consideration of the physical, emotional and educational needs. In view of the many health team members providing care to the pregnant diabetic, one central figure with continued interaction can decrease fragmentation and provide continuity of care.

Comparison of Methods for evaluating patient response to nursing care.

Prenatal patients (chosen because the staff wished to know the patients attitudes toward their care and because on the health-illness continuum they were well and not dependent on staff for their daily needs) were asked to evaluate their obstetric care by means of a questionnaire and an interview. Of 191 questionnaires distributed in the obstetric clinic of a large university medical center, 79 completed forms were returned and 39 interviews were done, using the format of the questionnaires. The interviews were conducted from the clinic by a person not on the clinic staff. Overall results showed no significant difference in patient responses between interview or questionnaire. The study revealed that the patients generally were satisfied with their care but that certain areas needed improvement.

Baccalaureate nursing students' identification with the women's movement.

To determine if nursing and nonnursing students changed their attitudes about themselves and the "typical nurse" in relation to feminist movement goals, results of 291 questionnaires were studied. A significant difference was found in the view of self and typical nurse for female nursing students, the nurses showing more feminist leanings as they progressed in school. Male nurses, nonnurses, and females in typical and atypical female majors rated themselves lower than female nurses on the feminist scale.

Effect of Prepodyne as a perineal cleansing agent for clean catch specimens.

In a study to determine a safe cleansing agent for collection of midstream urine specimens, 35 pregnant women (25 experimental subjects who cleansed the periurethal area three times with Prepodyne and 10 control subjects who did not cleanse the area), Prepodyne was found to be satisfactory. Although iodine was detected in the urine of women who used Prepodyne, the amount was not in sufficient quantity to alter bacterial colony counts or to inhibit growth.

A comparison of amalgam microleakage with a 4-META liner and copal varnish.

This in vitro study compared the microleakage of Class 5 amalgam restorations placed in extracted human teeth lined with a 4-META liner (Amalgambond), with similar restorations lined with copal varnish (Copalite). The restored teeth were stored in saline for 1 week, 6 months, and 1 year, then thermocycled, stained with 5% methylene blue, sectioned, and viewed using a light microscope. It was found that at 1 week and 6 months the 4-META group leaked significantly less than the copal resin group, but after 1 year there was no significant difference between groups.
