Ingestion of crude oil: sublethal effects in herring gull chicks.

A single small oral dose of Kuwait or South Louisiana crude oil caused cessation of growth, osmoregulatory impairment, and hypertrophy of hepatic, adrenal, and nasal gland tissue in herring gull chicks living in a simulated marine environment. These findings suggest that ingesting crude oil causes multiple sublethal effects that might impair a bird's ability to survive at sea.

Effects of gonadal hormones on the hypothalamic multi-unit response to glucose and saline in the rat.

The role of gonadal hormones in modulating the hypothalamic multi-unit activity (MUA) response to glucose and saline was studied in normal and gonadectomized male and female rats. In intact male rats, unlike intact females, all hypothalamic placements showed either an increase or a decrease in MUA following an injection of glucose. Gonadectomy alone did not produce a significant change in the pattern of hypothalamic response to glucose. Daily injections of estradiol-17beta resulted in a significant increase in the number of hypothalamic sites that did not show a glucose-induced change in MUA. In general, the effects on saline tended to parallel those on glucose, although the changes were not as extensive. The results are discussed of estradiol modulation of body weight (b.w.) and of the hypothalamic responsiveness to various stimuli, including glucosse and saline injections.

Generation in vitro of deletions in the broad host range plasmid RK2 using phage Mu insertions and a restriction endonuclease.

Several non-lethal deletions of the broad host range plasmid RK2 (molecular weight of 37.6 . 10(6) have been produced in vitro. The method employed relied on the single HindIII restriction nuclease site in RK2 and the ability of phage Mu to insert and thereby add new HindIII restriction sites at various positions in the plasmid. The deleted plasmids have in each case lost kanamycin (Km) resistance, and in two cases are defective in self-transmissibility. The method used to reduce the size of the RK2 plasmid also results in the cloning of each of the two ends of the Mu phage DNA on the plasmid derivatives.

DDE feeding and plasma osmoregulation in ducks, guillemots, and puffins.

To assess the possibility that organochlorine pesticide disruption of osmoregulation is responsible for recent large kills of young seabirds, we have studied the effects of DDE feeding (10-250 ppm) on plasma osmoregulation and nasal gland function in the following species: mallared and white Pekin ducks (both Anas platyrhynchos), black guillemot (Cepphus grylle), and common (Fratercula arctica). Other investigators have recently reported that dietary DDE (10-1,000 ppm) inhibits nasal gland secretion in freshwater-maintained mallards; our initial experiments with white Pekins showed no such inhibition during either freshwater or seawater maintainance. Moreover, DDE had minimal effects on plasma electrolyte levels and total nasal gland Na-K-ATPase activities in all species studied. Liver DDE levels in experimental ducks and guillemots were comparable to those reported for seabirds found dead after kills; levels in starved experimental puffins were much higher. Thus DDE at environmental levels does not affect osmoregulation or nasal gland Na-K-ATPase either in ducks or in two species of oceanic birds.
