This is a two-pronged critique of a study of the socialisation of neophyte nurses in a neonatal intensive care unit in the USA. The authors, respectively an educationalist and a nurse researcher experienced in neonatal intensive care, agreed in finding that the study fell short of what it promised, but differed as to their reasons. They decided to publish their critiques as a complementary pair, in the hope that those supervising research students would benefit from seeing a disappointing study simultaneously in two perspectives, educational and clinical.
OBJECTIVE: Key informants' perceptions of nutrition and health needs in their southern rural communities were assessed prior to nutrition intervention planning. DESIGN: This cross-sectional survey used in-person interviews. SUBJECTS/SETTINGS: A sample of 490 individuals from 12 professional and lay roles in 8 community sectors in 36 counties in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi was chosen. STATISTICAL ANALYSES PERFORMED: Factor analysis was carried out on reported food, nutrition, and health problems and contributing factors. The General Linear Models procedure identified within- and between-subject effects for factors. Tukey's post hoc tests identified differences between sectors and states. Frequencies and weighted rankings were computed for health problems. RESULTS: Key informants rated individual-level factors (food choices, education, willingness to change, health behavior) as more important than community-level factors (food and health care access, resources) with regard to nutrition and health problems and contributors to problems. The number one health problem was hypertension. IMPLICATIONS: Key informants are knowledgeable about nutrition and health problems, contributing factors, and available resources. Individual factors were perceived as more important contributors to nutrition and health problems providing valuable information for planning nutrition interventions.
The Nursing Education Partnership Program between Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University and Foo Yin Junior College of Nursing and Medical Technology in Taiwan is in its third year. This program provides an opportunity for associate-degree nurses from Taiwan to earn a bachelor of science degree in nursing. The educational challenges, inherent in such a program, became evident early in the first semester. This article outlines those challenges and the educational strategies that were successful with this group. Implementation of the curriculum reflects four culturally significant aspects of the educational process: identifying community resources to meet basic needs for adaptation to a foreign country; redesigning teaching and learning strategies for international students; preparing faculty, clinical agency staff, patients, and other students to accept and become actively involved in this international program; and developing faculty-student relationships that promote mentoring and foster professional role development. Although the strategies presented were used with a group of students from Taiwan, they also can meet the needs of other international students.
PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of cueing on communicative responses of children with multiple disabilities in an educational setting. It was hypothesized that differences would exist in teacher interactional styles and the use of orienting cues would increase the communicative responses of the participants. METHOD: A naturalistic observation research method was employed in order to examine the interaction of three student-teacher dyads in three special schools. Three different activity types were videotaped from which interactions were coded and analysed. RESULTS: Multi-modal cueing facilitated communicative responses of children with Rett syndrome. However, increased communication opportunities provided by caregivers did not elicit increased responses from the girls. CONCLUSION: There is a difference in cueing by teachers in their interactions with children with multiple disabilities. Also, more frequent communicative interactions did not necessarily lead to increased student responses. It is suggested that amount and type of cueing may need to be considered to be effective in generating student responses. The small number of participants, however, means findings should be viewed cautiously and that more research is indicated.

Mentoring is a positive method for promoting professional development; however, there is little information in the literature addressing the use of mentoring with baccalaureate nursing students. Because professional socialization is a critical component of baccalaureate nursing education, mentoring would be an optimal methodology. The authors describe how a mentorship program combined with a professional role development course was integrated into a BSN nursing program. The evolution of the faculty-student mentorship program and the professional role development course is presented.
An instructional video entitled "A Video On Discharge Planning; An Experience in Amateur Film Making" was designed. The advantages and disadvantages of the video-production process were reviewed. The film-making process is described including scriptwriting, actor selection, the filming process, and the editing process. An analysis of the filming process revealed that several measures could prove time saving and ensure a high quality video, such as script writing, background selection, actor involvement, and the filming and editing processes used. The conclusion lists guidelines for a health education video production.
Psychiatric nurses are not as stressed in their work as most research seems to indicate. The stress that does exist relates to organisational, rather than work-related matters. However, this study recommends that further investigations need to be conducted to address the needs of those who are reporting unacceptably high levels of stress.
